Hi

I received my Humax decoder today from Italy (with smartcard). I have Sky setup and my dish is pointing to Hotbird 13 EST. Is it just a matter of plugging in the humax decoder and inserting the smartcard or is the setup not that east?

regards

Paul

If you're pointing at 13 degrees east then you're on the right satellite so that part is ok.
However, has the card been activated? It can only be activated in 2 ways: by a phone call to an Italian call center, 199.309.409, during which you will be asked your name, address, date and place of birth, codice fiscale (Italian tax number) and possibly your tv licence number.
By sending an e-mail to customercare @ tivu.tv with all of the above info.

D.

Hi Denis

Thanks for the reply. Yes the card has been activated in Italy .

I was briefly checking the signal strength on the decoder last night and it was rather poor - around 28%. The cable from the LNB to the decoder is +- 15m.

It is not possible to comment really as your dish size is not recorded in your system setup, it sounds like your dish/lnb need fine tuning though but the problem could be your dish size if it is ridiculously small. If by sky setup you mean a sky dish then your skew is probably going to be wrong for 13 East

Hi

thanks for the comments - The Sky Italia setup works well - ths dish is 70cm. Sorry but what do you mean by skew setup?

Rotation of the LNB in order to get best reception of both Horizontally and Vertically Polarised Transponders.

You may benefit from altering it slightly by experiment.

I take it the Dish is not actually a Sky Dish (Which uses an LNB design with a limited possible range of skew adjustment centred on 28E), but a Dish with a 40mm Collar Mounted LNB?

HI

Yes -- sorry for the terminology - its not a SKY dish. Its a 78cm dish - standard installation (if there is one).

How do you test moving the LNB or should that only be done by a technician?

Note the current position (there is a scale on the LNB case and a datum mark on the collar). Perhaps mark it with Tippex or similar.

Then slightly slacken the collar clamp screws and rotate it a little bit one way. Tighten off and go check the results.

If no better, repeat by rotate the opposite way. Check.

If better, fine. If not, revert to original position.

Did you install the dish yourself ie are you reasonably happy fiddling?

Are there any dodgy Channels at all on Hotbird using your Sky Italia Receiver?

Does the TivùSat Receiver get non-Tivù Hotbird Channels ok?

Hi

Thanks for the advice - I didnt fit the dish myself but I'm happy to fiddle.

On SKY I currently get all the RAI channels and Canale 5 -- the reason why I got the Tivusat box is to make the missus happy so she can continue watching centovetrine - I'll have a look again tonight - hopefully I'll get this working otherwise I'll be back on here tomorrow asking you experienced guys some advice .

thanks

Paul

Umm a couple of safety points:

mark everything with tippex or a dab of paint BEFORE you start undoing the bolts - its easy to knock a loose dish and end up with it hoplessly misaligned. The marks will help you set it back to start point if you do knock it.

DONT try to move your dish UNLESS you have completely safe access to it. A £50 call out charge for a local installer is far preferable to falling off a ladder!

Just so you don't waste any time trying, skew cannot be adjusted using a squawker. This is because a squawker only measures gross signal level, not demodulated signal quality. What happens when you try to set skew with a squawker is as you turn the LNB it loses some of one polarisation and gains some of the other with the net effect being that there is no notice change in tone (i.e. no information feedback). The only way to do it properly is read the quality level of the demodulated source. Adjust a bit and re-check quality, either using a decent receiver which displays this, or much more comfortable using a professional grade meter at the dish.

I assume this is what he intends as there is no mention of a squawker or meter :)

That said, I haven't yet had the pleasure of seeing how well specified the TivùSat Decoders are. I'll have to wait until June next year when we next go to Italy.

Well to me, "technician" = meter. The reason I mentioned squawker is just so he knows that buying one would not help in setting skew. Sorry if I was rambling.

Oh, I see!

I think he means "technician" in terms of a technically skilled person (what many mistakenly refer to as an Engineer) as opposed to the task being suitable for DiY.

Ramble away - I certainly do! :)

Hi

Replaced the cable and the signal strength went up drastically - must have been something wrong with the cable. Setup instructions were not that well documented but eventually got it working.

Enterprising and successful - Well done!

Cable, eh? Did you inspect it to determine whether the root cause was physical damage or water ingress (or both)?

hi

I've not bothered inspecting the old cable as it works now but I'll examine it tonight and let you know.

See if the cable outer sheath has got nicked and let in water. (Or if someone has put a nail through it!)

Hi All,

Since the changes in Italy to Digitial Terrestial, Beautiful and Centrovetrini are now blue with the TIVU SAT screen. My wife is practicly dieing:eek: without these programs as they show the normal commercials just to wind you up but not programming. Lol Has anyone bought TIVU SAT decoder & card and installed it here in U.K. and were they able to see these programs (Beautiful & Centrovetrini)? Also are you able to watch the rest of the channels they advertise. Any help would be much appreciated.

Thank you.

I can confirm to you 100% that these programmes are viewable with tivusat decoder and card.
