i was thinking of trying out linux...

i hear some good reports about it, and im sick of windows hogging all the system resources..

you upgrade your PC to turbo charge it... only for windows to run a trillion application in the background GRrrrr

anyway... for a newbie to Linux i realise there are tons of versions, what would be best?

also can you dual boot without problem?

cheers

Well I do not exactly run it more than administer it, I certainly do not have it on a home PC atm but in answer to a couple of your questions

Yes you can dual boot it

I agree about the system resources but I feel it is more AV and spyware hogging those these days, but yes a lot will be freed up

As for the flavour well I run 1 Red Hat server and 5 Kubuntu servers but Ubuntu I understand is the flavour of the month but don't ask me why I am not clued up enough.

Tha advantage of Linux is that many people have experienced and developed all the different versions but it is all documented on the web and therefore relatively easy to find solutions is something does not go to plan.

Good luck, I may do the same myself when I can free up a bit of time

Lots of variants have live Cds, so you can try it before you commit to installing. Mepis is another with a good following and Puppy is supposed to be very quick if you have limited resources

My neighbour is a PHP programmer and he reckons Ubuntu is the best one.

As mentioned in another thread, I ran Lindows, now called Linspire and my biggest disappointments were that a) it wasn't much, if at all faster than XP and more importantly, the little programs and utilities that with windows you could find a legitimate version for nothing, with Linux, you invariably had to pay for it.

I'll be interested to hear how you get on. :)

I do a lot of photo and small video editing on my PCs and laptops Andy, are there free Linux programs available to do this type of job?

I've tried and quite like Kubuntu (the KDE version of Ubuntu), it has a windows feel to it but is definately more useable than the original Ubuntu, but it's the leaving behind the programs and utilities you get used to in Windows and quite literally starting from scratch that's the main reason why I haven't switched over yet... :)
