TV Screens, diff between lCD and TFT?

- No satellite stuff for the moment (aside from a 43cm minidish that was on the house already), Samsung SyncMaster T27B550 Smart TV & Monitor, and a few computers...

Erm, they're actually the same thing, TFT is Thin Film Transistor and requires a Liquid Crystal environment to function correctly, so, LCD is Liquid Crystal Display, but this can often refer to anything from the display on your calculator to a 36" TFT TV!!! 
It's just marketing, as people these days think TFT means a PC monitor...

They are not exactly the same thing. The TFT LCD is an enhancement of the original LCD. The transistors are added to ensure that the LCD elements are switched properly. The original LCD doesn't have the transistors.
The TFT refers to the way the transistors are fabricated, using a thin film of silicon, rather than a crystaline structure grown on wafers.

Yes, that sounds about right. With the 7 segment type LCD screens it is possible to drive each element directly, as not many pins are required. Thus image quality does not suffer, and thus no advantage in using the transistors.
RS also do small matrix type LCD displays which I have used in the past. They are for displaying alphanumeric characters.
They are pretty cheap, and image quality is not as important as for a TV for example.
