two way signal

Sort of a digi/sat question I suppose but can anyone shed some light for me on this business of a two way signal between decoder and provider? Is s*ys two way signal reliant on the phone line or is it done over the air waves?

Phone line only, I think they'd love it if the other was possible, but it isn't with existing equipment.

Uplink via a small dish I would have thought would require a fair bit of RF... That would put the price of the box up quite a bit. A microwave transmitter of that kind of power I think is beyond my price range...
