Hi,

Not sure If this thread is in the right place but...

I wonder if you guys can help me. I may be moving to Helsinki and living in the Espoo area.

From what I have read it seems that it is possible to receive UK Sky TV in that area.

Although what is unclear is how I would go about organizing this for example, I have a sky box I use it in the UK currently. However...

-How do I get hold of a valid Sky card and subscription?

-I take it that I do not go through Sky directly?

Also I see that i may well need a larger dish,
-What sort of price range could I expect for this?

Hope you can help
A.

Get the equipment / subscription set up before you leave and just take the receiver & card with you when you go. DONT tell Sky your are leaving the country or the card will immediately be cancelled.

You will need a bigger dish (especially if you want the Astra 2D BBC & ITV channels)

Astra 2d channels need a huge dish in Finland (2.4m) but the other ones are receivable with a much smaller dish, 1metre dish should be enough for most of them.

Check out more info about satellite tv in Finland from a forum called Huoltovalikko, there is a small section available for english topics as well.

I've installed a 1.3m offset dish with a white Sharp LNB for Sky in east Helsinki and it gets everything except Astra 2D, it needs to be aligned spot on and there is not much margin for rain/snow fade on the Astra 2A/2B south transponders.

I have also installed a 1.8m prime focus dish with an Invacom C120 quad LNB in Helsinki and that works a bit better but still no Astra 2D.

Both are hooked up to a Pace 2600C1. If you don't need Sky+ or HD then this is the best receiver to go for to get the weaker channels.

Hmmm,

So basically to get the regular Sky subscription I need to persuade the landlord to allow me to install a 2.4m/2.5m dish somewhere. :(

How much would one these things cost to buy and install (in the UK)?

Where is the best place to buy one?

What are the alternatives to a satellite dish for receiving the Sky channels, BBC ITV C4 SkyOne SkySports etc?

Thanks
A.

I can't really comment on prices for larger dishes but if you can live with just ITV1, Channel 4, Five, E4, More 4, Fiver, Five US for the basic channels (ie no BBC or ITV 2, 3 or 4) then you don't need a 2.4m dish. 1.3m will just about do, 1.8m is better. You'll also need to tune some of these channels in manually via the "other channels" menu (so no good for Sky+ timed recording) but at least you can see them.

Take a look at the channels on _http://www.lyngsat.com/packages/skyuk.html and ignore anything on Astra 2D (the first few frequencies) for an idea on what you could receive with a dish up to 1.8m and the relevant Sky subscription.

As for alternatives, you could get a Slingbox hooked up to a Sky box in the UK and a Sling Catcher for your TV in Finland but quality isn't that good and you'll have to be careful with upload limits in the UK.

Another option is to view content on iPlayer, 4OD, Sky Player, etc, but for that you'll need to fake your IP so it looks like you are in the UK. There are various VPN providers who can offer this but they can become overloaded as they get popular.

Sorry, forgot to add, as Raitsa says you can use an even smaller dish, say 1m, but you'd start to loose the Astra 2A and 2B south channels (see list from above). I've found the Five channels some of the weakest. Sky News is also not too strong and can suffer with smaller dishes. Personally I'd go with as big as you can get away with.

sky+ box 105cm lemon dish, inverto silver tech lnb

Hello i live in Turku, i have a 105cm dish and an inverto silver tech lnb. My subsciption is at my mum and dads, i phoned sky and told them i had a dish and box off afriend and i would be installing it myself in my mum and dads spare room because they already have sky also i told them i have no phone line just a mobile. So basically all i need is a sky card off them which they happily gave me. So now all my bills goto my mum and dads house and if i need to call them to change my package i just block my number. I cannot receive bbc 1 2 3 4 or itv2 3 4, but i get everything else, also all bbc sport can be viewed on bbc news interactive where you can watch eg F1 and wimbledon etc. The lnb was 20 pounds and it works perfectly. It was very easy to register the card from finland as well just block your number. Hope everything works out, Finland is the best country to live in, snowboarding after work in the winter and then in summer straight to the beach

Moi icebreak, when i set mine up 2 years ago i mounted the dish on the roof and ran the cables and did the connections, then i called in a specialist to tune it, i would definitely recommend that as it will save you alot of time (remember sky+ needs 2 cables to the LN:cool:. not sure what you can receive with a 1.5m dish i heard that for astra 2d it should be 1.8m, but with a good set up you never know. Sky 1 and sky sports you can loose with bad weather but the good news is you can tune into the irish sky sports, sky1, E4, E4+1 and they stay clear even in a blizzard. Also i watch londons channel4 and yorkshires ITV. As for the bbc`s and ITV 2,3,4 i cannot receive with my dish size (wife wont let me have bigger). HD is up to you. Please let me know what happens with your dish and the bbc´s

The damn rules here forbid me to give out my email addy to you (the one above is edited by a moderator) and the same damn rules do not let you contact me with a private message.

Being the admin of a 10000 member sat community myself, I fail to see the logic in all this in a forum environment which are essentially made for users communicating to each other.

All forums are populated by web crawlers sometimes as many as 500 at any one time belonging to all the top search engines. Posting your email address then opens up your mail box to millions of spam emails, the rule is in place to avoid the harvesting of any such email addresses.

The purpose of this forum is to help all members and having a private email exchange or a PM session does not benefit other people.

Well if you could be bothered to read some of the information posted here you would probably have no need of an installer as many thousands have already done so in the past. It would appear that as you wish to take the line of least resistance and do not wish to install your own you have tagged on to the wrong thread in the wrong section and should have created your own thread in the installer wanted section.;)

I'm seriously getting hacked off with people who questions rules which are here for good reasons and formulated over a 10 year period. Being am admin on a small forum is totally different, any information posted on this forum is on google within 10 minutes, so we have sometimes to take measures to protect the forum and protect members from themselves.

It is not too long ago that a member accused us of selling his email address to spam lists, we investigated and found that he had posted it in several threads on the forum, so it was his own stupidity which generated the spam.

Regarding the PM system, it is only enabled after members have been on the forum for a month and made a certain amount of posts, this is because it was being abused by spammers and people publicising their own forums or touting for work. We will always make special dispensations to people who require an installer and need to communicate personally with a fellow member, but they need to ask us, not criticise the forum.

As Topper says, these sections are for discussion, there is a dedicated section for those seeking installers and we are geared up there to watching for people requiring PM privileges to make contact.

One more criticism in this thread and it's closed.
