My Satellite Setup
Technomate 5402 HD M2 Ci, DM7000s, Transparent 80cm Dish, Moteck SG2100 DiseqC motor, lots of legacy gear. Meters: Satlook Digital NIT, Promax HD Ranger+ spectrum analyser.
My Location
Berkshire
I've seen a report for Pistoia near Florence
using an inexpensive 1.4m dish and cheap LNB, receives Astra2D, but not all of the time, so either using a better quality and or bigger dish with top quality LNB should give you reliable reception. The receiver is of course of prime importance.

As Rolf identiifed already you should be able to recieve reception from Astra 2 D with 90 % coverage ( some loss of signal in poor weather conditions) from that of a precision 1.8 /2.0 mtr dish and suitable receiver such as the Panasonic or Grundig.

Also equally ensure only the best of quality for LNB.

Around two years ago i did see a report of " Independent" testing conducted acutally in Florence.

I will see if the file is backed upon on the server and i will add here if i am able to

Best regards

Thanks OS, am I right in thinking that it would be more cost effective to buy the equipment (not the dish as prices here seem to be competitive) in the UK?
If your old files to throw up that report I would be very interested in seeing it.

Dear Dave,

Many thanks for your comments.

Will research your suggestions re supply & costs of dish & receiver locally and will hopefully be able to have everything in place in time for the Cheltenham meeting in 3rd week March.

Regards,

Michael.

His name is Gianluca, tel no 3382890860 he is located in Incisa.
He does not speak very much English.
I think you should specify a 2 meter dish or bigger say 2.4 to obtain 24/7
reception.
If you mention to him the name Raffeale Marrone(and mine) in Mattasino it will jog his memory.
Also you may consider getting SKY Italia,it has lots of English Language programmes.Films/docs/news/sport ect.
