Sorry, I have done a search for "Ukraine" but I've not found the info I'm after. Or rather, I don't understand it.

It appears that Ukrainian TV is on the Astra 4a Satellite (I think?), but is there a "dummies" guide for what size dish/type of LNB i should buy in order to receive these channels at home (East Midlands)?

Thanks a lot.

4 8°E is pretty strong here & is your best bet for ukrainian channels, plus if you get a subscription the Viasat channels are also there with english audio too. TV Corner do subs but you have to buy it with Viasat's dedicated receiver which looks like a pile of poo tbh Viasat Ukraine subscription

Thanks both. That's great, I'll get started. There is an old Sky dish on the house that's not even connected up. I'll start by trying to point that the correct way.

You will struggle with a 45 cm dish at your location under all weather conditions see footprint map below,
To ensure good reception from 4.8 east a 90cm dish is best.

Ahh ok. Thanks. Going by the list above (Thanks Sheffield) is the best bet a 1m one? I believe anything bigger than 1m may upset the neighbours and need planning permission?

im getting 31% signal on the nordic beam today & its been raining on & off all day, so id say a 1 meter dish would be ok.

technically your allowed one 1 meter dish & another no more then 60cm without planning permission. that being said a house down the road from me has two 1 meter dishes & a Sky dish & no ones battered an eyelid

Thank you Sheffield. Is there an recommended dish and LNB type to get as well as an idiots guide to pointing it ? I did a search again, but my search skills suck) eBay is full of mesh/solid dishes and associated LNBs is all.

If you are happy with just the free channels they are on the European beam rather than the Nordic beam and you will probably get away with an 80-90 cm dish

FlySat Astra 4A / SES-5 @ 4.8° East

The ZeonBud channels are a bit odd as they require what are known as "multistream" receivers

the Inverto Black Ultra Single HGLN 40mm LNB is a good choice of LNB & what im using. iv found over the years that solid dishes work better then mesh but some will probs say different, any dish of the correct size will do tho

The Zeonbud channels (the ones on 12188H and 12341H) are a special format as @Analoguesat has mentioned. But a cheap receiver like the Octagon SX88 or the Edision Primo IP S2 which a fair few of us on here have been playing with recently (there are threads about them) will tune them in fine. These are the feeds for Ukrainian digital terrestrial so include all the major channels watched there.

I can get those ones pretty well on an 80cm dish in Worcestershire.

Thanks Adam and AnalogueSat too. I'll get one of those boxes in that case. Very helpful.

Or mutant 51 look at my post for ukraine dvbsx multistream from 4.8e working fine on a 64cm in hull even in rain think the multistream is a strong tp.

Ive had some of the stronger 5E tp's on a 45cm dish in the past but that doesnt allow any rain fade. I ws suggesting 80/90cm in the expectation namdom wasnt wanting the signals to disappear every time it drizzled in Leicestershire (not far from my home area) :D

Just when i thought I knew what to buy, there's mention of this "Mutant 51" box and the associated configuration. I was all set to just buy a 1m solid dish, the Black Ultra Single LNB and the "cheaper" Edison Primo box. Are you saying that I'd be better off buying the same 1m dish, LNB, but the Mutant 51 box?

I did read the link from Mike1 from start to finish, but I don't understand the terminology of TP/Multistream etc, so wasn't sure of the advantages? Ideally I'm just after the free Ukraine stations (1+1 etc) and as hassle free as possible in terms of updating configs/boxes etc?

The Edision box is essentially plug and play. Connect it to the dish pointing at 4.8°E and scan the transponders on the satellite. No additional configuration is needed. I'm not familiar with the Mutant box myself, but the Edision and Octagon receivers require no additional configuration for the channels.

If you just want to be able to watch the Ukrainian channels without any hassle then that would definitely be my suggestion. I have an Edision Primo and it's a neat, simple little box. The Octagon is pretty much identical in terms of features and user interface from what I understand!

TP = transponder. That's basically a frequency carrying a group of channels.
Multistream is just a way of sending the digital TV data over a satellite transponder in a format that's designed to feed professional equipment, usually at terrestrial transmitters - to provide the digital transmitters with the programme feed. It's a professional format that until recently most domestic receivers couldn't tune in. These cheap Edision and Octagon tuners all tune it in fine though which is one of the reasons they've become so popular!

I would say you'll be fine with an 80cm dish, but a 1m one will give you an even stronger signal which isn't a negative!
