A little less analogue, and a lot more crap.

If the signals sent from the TV down the HDMI cable are turning off the surround sound setting, it - should - be easy to check by connecting the optical cable directly from bluray to the Sony audio centre, and briefly pulling the HDMI cable out from the TV.

That would need an optical to co-axial (or vice-versa) adaptor though.

Which is what the o/p was looking into earlier in the week.

Removing the HDMI stops viewing of the Bluray setup menu, plugging it into a modern computer monitor will allow viewing of any releasing of the stereo restriction.

The purchase of the adaptor will no longer be needed if the replacement player works as expected so I expect that it will be an unnecessary expense and therefore not happen.

Apart from the expense of a second player.

which could potentially be removed by suitable disabling of HDMI protocol from the TV.

But I think the replacement player has already been ordered and (presumably) paid for.

good news is i got a new player bd-h6500 and it works fine over the hdmi [emoji4]
so thank you everyone for your help [emoji106]
