A little less analogue, and a lot more crap.

The QNAP is 21tb ..
and the reason I bought it really ..
the readynas doesn't natively address such large hard drives ...hence the upgraded hardware..
My readynas is populated with 4x 4tb ..giving about 12tb of useable space ..
both units are effectively raid 5
(though readynas calls it Xraid)
In combo ...I have over 30tb on 2 units..now.
:D

It's going to take Norton360 at least a week to fill her up.........................

100% complete at 3:13 PM ....so about 22 hours to sync all 4 drives ..
imo ...that's fast..

How many weeks will it take for you to fill it?

But that's brilliant going for all 4 to be done now.
Your guess is as good as mine..
I will only be half filling it with the data I currently have ..but I'm sure it will take many days..
;)

I know the disks are expensive, but it would be really good if you could stock a spare.

If you have drives from same mfg, same design, roughly the same batch, and they're turned-on at roughly the same periods (they are if they're in the NAS), then there's a greater likelyhood that they will start failing around the same time. For whatever reason - internal or exteranl (ie. mechanical wear-out, temperature overload, power overload, earth quake damage, whatever). And you only need two out of the four to fail.
So when one goes, you will want to swap a new one in asap, to ensure that only the rebuild period is the one where you are not running without redundancy.
Your strategy can of course be that you can get a replacement within a day or two when one of the drives fail, and that it will survive a day or two.
But you have to outweigh the cost with the risk...

I had a 2TB lying aroud for the ReadyNAS, and was able to swap it hours after one failed in the NAS recently.
I have ordered a new one as replacement spare, to have lying around until either the NAS fails, or i get the QNAP-itch :)

Very sensible ...and certainly I shall be doing just that next year ...
Luckilly I already have my media on the readynas ...and also a cold store backup of 16TB ...so although I may have drive issues in the future ..
Chances are I wont lose anything ...as I will effectively have everything in triplicate..
I learned the hard way it pays do this..

So ...
this is going to be a long process ..
So far tansferred about 500gb over the network to what I have named VIPERNAS ...see what I did there ...
;)
It has taken approx 22 hours ...
Only another 10tb-ish to go ...so maybe get most of it up before Christmas ...
lol
Slow but sure wins the race ...but then tortoises are a biased species.

One of my jobs through the christmas holiday is to sync all the data across my NAS drives to double up the redundancy

The progress is slow ..
So far have transferred Movies ...SciFi...Drama...Classic pre 1970s comedy..3/4 post 1970s comedy....US comedy ..AU comedy ..Radio comedy/plays ..
Total 7.25 TB ..
Still have a few TB to go ..including Music/Music vids ..Documentary..plus a few bits n bobs..
prolly about another 3TB in total ..
and has been transferring non stop for many days continuous since the QNAP build..
but ..like British Rail ...'getting there'

btw ..if anyone has the 'windsors' xmas special in avi or similar ....and can upload it to my drop box ..
I'd appreciate it ..
Sadly I missed that one..
doh!
