I have just gone motorised with the LIDL Comag FTA box and and SG2100A motor. I'm using my old 80 cm dish. Astra 1 & 2 and Hotbird are being picked up loud and clear.

I cannot get anything at 42 east or 1 west. Before I go back up the ladder to check all the settings, I was wondering if anyone had practical experience of trying to receive anything apart from the above three with a dish this size at a latitude similar to mine - 55,55N 3,10W (Edinburgh).

Could I also ask, how low in the sky are the eastern satellites. Is it straightforward to calculate the elevation of say the 42 east satellite at a given latitude. I was thinking at one point that this sat might be obscured by a block of flates a few hundred metres away.

Many thanks

You should be setting your due South on either 5W or 1W with a little compensation on the motor. How are you setting due South?

Hi westernapproach

you could have a look at http://www.digitalsat.co.uk/ the chap who runs it is a member on this board. He lives north of the border, perhaps a PM or Email to him might be of some help.

Go to www.smw.se and download the Swedish Microwave calculator, it will give you all of the information you require regarding elevation of different satellites.

Thor 1W should be fine from your location with an 80cm dish.
