Getting tired of listening to so called experts saying nothing, so I thought I'd consult that pool of widely experienced, technology minded individuals.....you lot.

. What can get into petrol to KO the oxygen sensor; always, of course taking into consideration that they'll be as cheap and nasty as possible while being able to survive in the hostile environment of a car exhaust.

I know nothing of what this might be, but will be very interested to hear the answer. :)

It is very interesting to see the people jumping on the bandwagon, with problems which could not as far as I can see be caused by fuel contamination. For example, one woman has been on Sky news saying that it has meant the replacement of her ECU????

The oxygen sensors do not like lead, maybe filled the garages with leaded. 'O'-red

If the octane rating is too low, perhaps through lack of additives, the ECU will be unable to correct enough and will go into limp home mode. Some garages will take the easy/most profitable way out and replace any/everything they think they can get away with.
If it's not lead or similar which has caused the problem, should be OK just to drain the tank and refill with good stuff. :)

Edit.
Report of silicon found in samples, Oxygen sensors do not like silicon at all, when fitting new ones, the instructions are not to use any sealant which contains silicon. Perhaps of more consequence, cost wise, neither do catalytic convertors.

I'd just heard that also. I knew pellistors (like in gas detectors) are poisoned by silicone sealant vapours, but don't know what technology is used in automotive oxygen sensors

Oxygen sensors? pah! who needs 'em?

Leaded or lead-free, my old 25-year-old Golf'll swallow anything :-rofl2

The other thing is, where are the garages going to store all of this contaminated fuel once removed, they are used to draining the odd car now and then, but not at this level. :)

2CVs don't need Oxygen sensors, just a tank, pump & carburettor... :D

The last time I heard of plastics in petrol it was to do with syphoning petrol using narrow bore pipe. However the mind boggles at the idea of millions of gallond being contaminated in this way :-lmao

Personally I don't care as I use diesel. :)

However, I think I read that there appears to be a possibility that a batch of petrol brought into the country by tanker may have been contaminated by whatever was in the hold beforehand.

I would take it, 10p a gallon sounds fair.
Plenty of vehicles here will run on the stuff (no namby pamby sensors/catalysts/fuel pumps here).

Looks like it's had Diesel additives or diesel itself mixed in by accident...

Ah well, just goes to show that modern computerised car engines are no good when it comes to a little problem where older cars would just keep going regardless... :D

It's an evil plot thought up by Rupert Murdoch to get us all to subscribe to Sky:-rofl2

Just a thought, everything else seems to be heading that way at the moment.

Unleaded is 95 octane
Super is 98 octane
The specialists, Shell V-power etc is 99 octane.

Not quite, some of the higher performance engines need a higher octane rating to run.
My own van (VW VR6) needs 98 octane minimum. Anything less and it won't run right.
As long as you use the minimum required, anything else is a waste of money.
Fortunately for you, the trusty 2CV needs nothing as complicated as this but it would still run on it no problem.
