My Satellite Setup
Orbital 80cm Dish,
Inverto 'Black Series' 0.2dB Twin LNB,
Moteck DiSEqC 1.2 motor,
Dreambox 500s
My Location
manchester
I finally took the plunge and ordered some gear, I wanted to keep costs down until I learn enough to spend more money.
My basic requirement was to pick up eastern sats 28, 19, 13.
I have ordered the following gear

Orbital 80cm Satellite Dish
Inverto 'Black Series' 0.2dB Twin LNB
Moteck DiSEqC 1.2 Satellite Dish Motor
Dreambox 500s
Cheapo sat meter

Now from reading on here I know the 500s was prob not the best receiver to get and will have to manually/save each sat position.
The inverto lnb was recommended on another forum so I stuck with that.
Now I was going to get a penta 85 dish but was not sure it was compatiable with the lnb and also mount I bought so stuck to a regular round one.

Would this kit be enough to get me the sats I want with decent signal strength.
I am located in manchester.

Thanks

My Satellite Setup
80cm Motorised.
Several small Dishes.
Much else.
My Location
North York Moors
Some people are disdainful of Orbital Dishes, but I have an 80cm one and despite the fact that the weather coat started peeling off around the back edge of the rim several years ago, it's actually holding its own quite nicely.

And 80cm is plenty big enough not just for those Satellites you mentioned, but plenty else as well.

I'll leave the pleasure of discovery to you :-pachrist

An 80 cm dish will give you plenty of signal for most of the European eastern sats.

Be aware some DM 500 clones have problems driving a motor due to poor quality power supplies in them

Ive had an Orbital 1m dish for 3-4 years and its cheap and cheerful. The only problem Ive had with it is getting the mount bolts to stay done up tight enough, although as mine is set up at fence level its not really a hassle if it does move.

I just added a couple of crinkly washers, Your Honour.

Yeah I read a few problems with the 500s but since I have the other version of the 500 I thought it would be good to use a familiar platform.
Glad my choice of gear will do the job required :)
What other sat boxes are recommended, I prefer linux based jobbies and must be networkable as I will be using CS. I have also been looking at the tm500 as you can use the modified dreambox images.

If you want HD then the Dreambox DM800 (or DM8000 if you have lots of cash lying around) are very nice Linux receivers that do HD. If you dont want HD then the DM600pvr (single receiver) or DM7025 (twin receiver but I believe out of production) are nice, or you could wait for the DM500S HD that will be released in the new year and is a little cheaper than the DM800HD.

If your Dreambox has an IF loopthrough, you could add a Hauppauge DVB-S2 card to your computer and use the Dreambox as a positioner. It is great for low symbol rates and for HD. DVB Viewer is the best program to use, it doesn't support the Hauppauge officially but works fine via the BDA driver.

If all you really want is 28-19-13e why not get the LNB holder and a few cheap LNBs and motorize later, if you still want to. A Technisat Multytenne is a much smaller alternative. For either option channel switching will be instant as there will be no waiting for the dish to move, and you won't have to worry about the wind whipping the dish around.

If you do get the Orbital 80cm, get the aluminum one.

Well I have already ordered the gear and it arrived today. I did think about the lnb holder but I know once I start I will want a nosey at 1w and 30w and possibly others.
The channels changes on the dm500 should be instant as long as the channels are ont he same sat so I will group them accordingly.

Thanks
