1500kbs (1 and a half megs) broadband 256kbs upload on telewest
at £35 if with another service such as a phone. or £40 on its own. They provide the cable modem for rental. I think the 3 meg broadband is a bit steep priced at £50 a month.

excellent news damhy i was not aware of that speed increase.

These are the new speed changes:
blueyonder broadband 3Mb becomes 4Mb
The flagship 3Mb service becomes even quicker - a 4Mb connection which offers speeds up to 80 times faster than dial-up access. We're also increasing the upload speed for this service to 384k. Price remains £50 a month.

blueyonder broadband 1.5Mb becomes 2Mb
The 1.5Mb service also gets a boost to 2Mb, for the same price of £35 per month.

blueyonder broadband 750k becomes 1Mb
The standard service will increase in speed from 750Kb to 1Mb, but will still cost £25 per month.

blueyonder broadband 256Kb
The entry-level 256Kb service will remain unchanged, costing £17.99 a month.

correct as of 9th dec 2004

Supposed to be getting 512kbps, although the modem software seems to be indicating 576kbps every time we connect. :) Its a bit different from dialup - which is like wading through glue in comparison. :D And no download limits....
Now to find some decent mp3 sites ;)

Following one of my earlier posts, Blueyonder have now increased my broadband from 3 to 4 gig for no extra cost. They have also increased the upload speed from 256k to 384k. :ch1

Can I change my reply please?

I've finally bitten the bullet and gone ADSL broadband. I only signed up for 512kbps but according to the meter it's working at 2.2mbps. Upstream is the standard 256kbps.

What is the general experience? Will my connection be slugged down to 512 at some time in the future? Have I struck lucky?

I should add that I am within what, when I was younger, would have been literally stone-throwing distance of the telephone exchange. Could this have something to do with it?

Well, you should get what you pay for, so enjoy for the time being!

Excessive distance from the exchange will just limit your maximum capacity.

BT is currently upgrading it's wholesale infrastructure, and some ISP's are giving free upgrades from 512Kbps to 1Mbps.

You may find that 2Mbps is the limit of the new ADSL equipment installed at the exchange, and the ISP will throttle that back to 512Kbps, giving you (them) an easy upgrade path.

I've just upgraded from 512Kbps with Wanadoo to 2Mbps with Pipex and it's noticably quicker just browsing.

Hitting the newsgroups is now lots of fun. Downloaded 35 Gig in the last 12 days!
