Hi, It is usual to use a DB9 to DB9 null-modem cable, but it depends on your receiver. Does it not say in the manual?

Yes, the null-modem is crossed. The wiring of a 9-pin null modem cable is as follows

Connections:
pin 2 ...to... pin 3
pin 3 ...to... pin 2
pin 4 ...to... pin 6
pin 5 ...to... pin 5
pin 6 ...to... pin 4
pin 7 ...to... pin 8
pin 8 ...to... pin 7

I thought the connections were just 2-3, 3-2, 5-5 and screen to screen, works for me.

Robbo is describing the full spec RS232 connections. Almost all PC to STBs just need the data flow, no handshake required.

The screen is the normally unsleeved stranded wires that are found in screened multicore cable. It is wrapped around all the other cables to provide rf screening or shielding. It is beneath the outer cover of a screened multicore cable.

Whether you can copy from box to PC depends if you have the correct softwares to do so.

and yes, that was the full wiring, as OP didn't say what box he had.

The screen connection is the chassis earthing of your equipment (prevents any electrical interference) Pin 5 is the signal ground, that and 2 -3 & 3 -2 are all that's needed for your data exchange to work.

Don't know what your STB is, but that cable is the usual one to use.
