hello,
wave guide is a rectangular peice of pipe that the signal waves travel on.
the guide is usualy cut close to the frequency that is being transmitted or received
higher the frequency the smaller the rectangle.
normaly the signal travels on the inner surface called the skin affect.
in your case your feed horn is round and the addapter is a bit oval but closer to rectangular.
do you must use it because you are picking up horz or vert polerazation.

I'm not sure I have a waveguide like that on my 1.8m prime focus dish (Invacom QDF-031 Quad LNB and a feedhorn that came with the dish). Should I have one or could it be built in to either the feedhorn or LNB?

A direct current (DC) flows through a wire using all of its cross-sectional area. If you put alternating cuurent (AC) through a wire then, as the frequency increases, it uses less and less of the cross-section moving closer to the surface. At high frequencies it almost on the surface only of the wire and that is why sometimes silver plating is used as this is where the AC is travelling. This is known as the skin effect and is especially apparent in the microwave region and higher.

A waveguide turns this inside out and traps the radio waves inside a tube. You will often find that inside surface is silver plated and, as it is protected from waether, will last longer.

A waveguide will also weigh less than an equivalent cable and have greater mechanical strength - which is important if you are trying to feed microwave radiation to or from the top of a tall mast.

hello, in order to know what you are doing i need to see what you have.
the picture uses a single polerzation lnb.
thus it is not ready for normal satellites.
here in europe we haver a lo of 9.750 and 10.6 the one in the picture is running 10.75 ghz.
so this will not pick up all the satellite band.
now we need to see your feed horn you have and what you are setting up.
this lnb is an old one from a long time ago.
so if you are trying to receive anything fringe there will be a lot of channels missing using a standard digital receiver.
take some pictures and tell us what you are trying to receive.
