I sent a copy of some info off the site to my Dad in Cyprus.
I have just received an email from him asking me to keep an eye out for info on his M-net/dish.

I assume before I can find anything worthwhile to send him, I would have to know a bit more about what set up he has. I know he has a motorised arial, a big dish and some sort of receiver, but what info should I get him to supply?

Receiver type, Dish size and make, Motor type and make, LNB type and make ( is it a C120 with separate feed or an integral feed). Cable lenght etc.

And of course, if he is having problems, a detailed description.

Thanks Rolf. I'll get back with that info a.s.a.p. :)

My father didn't get back to me, so now that I am visiting them in Cyprus I can give you the info myself....

Receiver - BEC DB 6600 CI
Dish - Mobo 1.8m
LNB - C Band California Amplifier Mini-Mag LNB 140011
Input 3.7-4.2GHz
Output 950-1450MHz
Gain 65 DB Typical
Noise 25K
Cable Length – approx 6.0m

He isn’t having any problems with the system, but we would if possible like to add any available extra channels. At the moment he has channels from the PAS4/7 satellite.
I scrolled through the set up menu and found quite a few satellites that we are receiving signals from, for example Telstar, Astra and Hotbird. All of them are receiving a signal strength of 75/80 and a quality of 57/60. Looking at the manual for the receiver I looks like it can be set to receive channels from 8 different satellites. Would you know the likelihood of being able to add any more channels?

Any suggestions gratefully received.

I guess that he could pull in quite a bit more if he added a Ku Band LNB Kevin, but I don't know too much about these combined feeds.

If you're pushed for time, why don't you try a quick home-made bracket lash-up alongside the existing LNB and see what you can get?

We have several members in Cyprus and several of them are in the know on feeds, perhaps one of them may be able to come up with a local source for a combined feed.

Do you mean a self installed LNB of the Ku type?

I wondered whether it would be possible to add some more channels from the other satellites that he already gets a signal from? Having run through the satelitte menu I found that he gets reasonable signals from about 30 different ones. Reading the receiver manual, it stated "if set on NONE only channels from one satelitte will be received", but it also says "if set on DISCQUE (or something like that) it will receive channels from 8 satelittes".
Does this mean that it would be possible to add extra channels without changing anything?

Sorry m8, missed your reply.

Yeah, I mean't add a universal.

You could always try the one-size-fits-all duct tape!

I'm really tired, I've read this thread three times and I still can't work out what the motor situation is! I take it there is one? I take it that at 1.8M it's a 36V 4-cable job? Is the receiver driving it?

If I'm doin' OK so far, then the diseqc option the receiver has could be used for switching LNB's :confused ?

Lyngsat will tell you what other channels are available from the existing sat locations. Just pick out the c-band ones and punch it in?

Unfortunately I don't have much of a clue about this kind of thing. It's all new to me.
I know that there is no motor, which I understand will restrict things somewhat. I don't have a clue if it's a 36V 4-cable jobby or if the receiver is driving it, but I will endeavour to find out. My dad says the dish is picking up Asia. It is pointing to the south and is set at about 40o from the horizontal.
If I get anymore info I'll post it. That Lyngsat site looks interesting, I'll have a good browse through that.

Thanks again,

Kevin

Right m8, I'm with you now.

Forget all the 4 cable/36V stuff. That's all motor related.

With a single LNB (which is what you have there - I found it at h**p://www.strong.com.au/lnb1.htm ) you will only receive a signal from one satellite orbital location.

calamp140011sm.gif

If you appear to be getting a signal from other sats, it's just a coincidence of frequencies duplicated on the sat you're ACTUALLY pointing at.

Single LNB, no motor. Forget multi-satellite viewing. Also forget diseqc. It won't do anything for you.

It's difficult to be sure where your dads dish is pointing from the info supplied, but it could be PAS7/10 at 68.5 E, which makes the dish/LNB C-band utilising horizontal and vertical polarisation. Not sure though, based on the channels carried on that sat.

Can you list the channels that are actually viewable?

I think that the answer to your original question is likely to be no, no extra channels without a hardware and callout/installation cost. You would need either a motor, or the addition of more LNB capacity, preferably Ku band.

By the way, I thought this was mildly interesting, if not very useful!

I am indeed. Got another 3 weeks here and the temperature is in the high 20's low 30's. Love it.
I will be quite busy though as Mum has now decided that she wants another receiver in the bed room and wants me to help her sort it out.

Hi m8. Don't you dare mention the weather there. It's chucking it down here with gale force winds!

You dad's dish is definitely pointed at 68.5 Deg E.

That's PAS7/10.

PAS 4 is at 72 deg E, but they have been known to move around. I don't know the history of PAS 4, and it may have been at 68.5 in the past. You will not receive anything from this sat. Remember, you can only receive one orbital location at a time.

Right, PAS7/10 has a mix of C-band and Ku-band.

Have a look here :- h**p://www.lyngsat.com/packages/mcafricapas10.html

That is what you are getting at the moment. If you're not getting all these channels, then you may be able to add them to your current subscription.

They are all in Irdeto 2, and are therefore only obtainable with a valid card.
There is no current hack for Irdeto 2.

You will note that all the frequencies on the left are four digit, and therefore in the C-band.

If however you look here :- h**p://www.lyngsat.com/pas68.html

you will see that the top few channels are also in C-band. You can get all the unencrypted ones by adding the transponder details into your receiver.

The Irdeto 2, Cryptoworks and Powervu channels, you will not get without an additional subscription, and that's if you can physically get one.

The channels listed lower down are on Ku-band, which you could also receive if you added a Universal Ku-band LNB alongside your C-band LNB, or replaced the existing one with a dual-band combined LNB unit. You will have to research that yourself, as I know nothing about it. As Rolf said, check out your local installers for info and prices.

Hope this helps.
