My Satellite Setup
Not decided yet
My Location
Bodrum, Turkey
I am hoping to install a SKY satellite system in a property that I own in the Bodrum area of Turkey. I have been told that with well sourced components a 1.5m to 1.8m dish should be able to pick up a good selection of Sky channels on the 2A and 2B Astra satellites. (I know that 2D is going to be impossible with those sizes) I was thinking of buying an Invacom quad 0.3db LNB in the UK (easier to find and purchase in the UK) along with a good length of quality satellite cable and a Pace digibox and taking them out on my next visit. The only addition would then be a satellite dish and mount.
What I would like to ask is: what is the most popular type of dish in the 1.5 to 1.8 metre range to be found in Turkey. Is it a prime focus or an offset and are there any major differences in price between the two types (or for that matter in performance). Ideally it would be easier to take out a universal Invacom LNB suitable for an offset dish as it would eliminate the need for finding an appropriate feed horn but if I do this am I going to be able to find an offset dish easily in this size.
Any recommendations for dishes or suppliers in the Bodrum area or any other suggestions would be most welcome.

Unfortunately we don't have many members living in Turkey, hope one will spot this thread. :)

There is certainly one dish manufacturer based in Turkey, not sure what the quality is like on their larger dishes though, as I'm not over impressed with the quality of the smaller ones I've seen.

Snap's setup: (In Spain) Humax HDR, Prodelin 1.8m dish + Invacom QDF-031 + CM feed, (In UK) CallFlow VDSL + EE 4G, Sky Q, YouView HD, Mac OSX, iOS

UK: Tonbridge, Kent. Spain: Madrid.
You'll find an offset dish will work better than a prime focus of the same size. Avoid the really cheap ones, particularly FortecStar or any re-branded versions.
The universal Invacom LNB's have a reasonable but not spectacular performance. They are beaten by MTI BlueLine, if you can find one.
Most offset feedhorns willl have the right F/D (ratio of focal length to diameter of dish), usually about 0.6.
The Gibertini feedhorn is pretty cheap (try HiSat in the UK) so you could afford to take out one of these and the Invacom prime focus feedhorn (buy direct from Invacom website) so you have both options covered.
In fringe areas nothing beats the Invacom Quad C120 LNB QDF-031.
This will work on both types of dish.

if you want The Horizontals on 2D you will need a 5Mtr Dish from this location Meaning Fethiye Dalaman And Marmaras

A2.4 Metre Dish Cheap and cheerful From Bilsat would be a Good Start No 2D But Ch4 Ch5 Sports 123 Sky News And The Channels With +1 Nat Geo Nickleodeon chs Scifi sky 123 this size dish is @ the top end size of there range Don.t Waste Your Money on a Good Lnb For This Dish then you go to the big boys the Laser range of Dishes are 1 Piece Spun aluminium

Gary will actually have to register to post on the forum and neither of you will be able to use the PM facility as that is restricted to members who have been registered a while and have made considerably more posts than two. This situation has arisen because a number of new members have been abusing the PM facility and spamming members via the PM system so unfortunately all new members both good and bad have to sufer.

Hi, I have a new property near Altinkum and also would like Sky television without having a massive satellite dish. Can you tell me if you managed to get and if so if it was straightforward and not too expensive for the dish. Many thanks.

Welcome to the forum Goldilocks

OK first thing I would say is without a big dish you will get very little if anything at all as the system is designed for reception in the UK.
Some of the co-located sats have stronger less focussed transmission footprints than others so even if you get a biggish dish you will not get Sky UK in its totality as has been already outlined in previous posts in this thread but some channels you will get. You could of course set up a slingbox system from your uk home to there but that is something else to read up on.

Here's a post i found by chance:

Hope this more detailed reply helps..

SKY broadcast from FOUR different satellites

1/ Astra 2A @ 28.2E _http://www.lyngsat/astra2a.html
2/ Astra 2B @ 28.2E _http://www.lyngsat/astra2b.html
3/ Astra 2D @ 28.2E _http://www.lyngsat/astra2d.html
4/ Eurobird @ 28.2E _http://www.lyngsat/eb1.html

Astra 2A and B are the most powerful and consequently need a smaller dish to recive the channels. Astra 2D is where most BBC and ITV channels are broadcast and is MUCH weaker, which is why we need bigger dishes..but most channels are free. We cannot get channels from Eurobird.

BBC/ ITV reception - no SKY card needed-not even a SKY receiver !

In the west of TR, Istanbul/ Izmir a good ( Famaval ) dish will reliably bring in BBC/ ITV ( weakest but free)

Bodrum east to Gazipaza a good 2.7m ( DH) should bring in BBC / ITV all day

Another 50-100 Km east a 3.0m - up to up to 50 Km west of Silifke( DH, Famaval with extensions to 3.1m ) will suffice

Further east - 50 km east of Silifke a 4.2m Jonsa dish ( well installed ) will offer reliable reception, but the Astra 2 D reception is falling away ..FAST..

Thereafter, a 4.5m, for another 40Km and a 5.0m, in the Mersin area. I have no data beyond this !

No problem to get SKY News, CNN, BBC Parliament - using ineractive feature to get BBC News 24, and major sporting events ( like Wimbledon) - free channels ...with a 1.5m offset dish in the west and a 3m in the east .

With a SKY subscription one can get most SKY channels , UK golds, etc on the smaller dishes.

A tip !! The Irish channels - only available with an Irish sub - approx 22 Euro /month - show Eastenders, Corrie, Emmerdale, The Bill - same episodes, same day.. but the signal is STRONGER - and the episodes are repeated the next afternoon - when - especially in the summer - the signal is stronger - and for the men - a Premiereship footie match is shown live on alternative Saturday afternoons ( different from the one on SKY) . BBC and ITV channels still available - but NOT Five - coming soon.

Please also note that some SKY receivers perform VERY poorly out here for reception of Astra 2D ( BBC/ ITV). The Pace 2600, Javelin Miniand Amstrad DRX 400 (not made now) ... Pace 440N, Thomson HD SKY+, Thomson 4214, are the best.

Any futher info req's .. please pm me

Markymark
