Had my First car way back in 1968 shared with my twin brother. This was a Cortina 16E Maroon colour, bought brand new in Malta between my brother and myself. Had no problem in sharing as we both were Radio officers so when one was at Sea the other could have it if he was in Malta. I know, one would ask, what if you were both at home!...rarely happened, although come to think of it, it did once....had to share the same girl....nah just pulling your leg or did we;)
Anyway those were the good old days. I still remember the number plate....65455. Uploaded a photo of it.

Hi,

My first? A red Morris Mini, APT287B. Bought second hand in 1968 (just before I passed my test at 3rd attempt) for £250.

Over the years it was treated to a remote gear change kit -instead of the magic wand - but it was very poorly engineered and often refused to go into third. It changed to two tone hammerite light blue and matt black during the early 70's (sprayed in my dads garage by yours truly) but by the time that decade drew to a close it became three tone with a 'light' overspray of rust and a Fred Flintstone floor. I think it finally went to the scrapyard in the sky about 1979. Sadly missed and often remembered.

Hi
I bought a red Morris 1100 DVW533B in 1968 just like the one John Cleese used to drive (and flail).I had never driven a car beforehand,it was good to learn in although it was inclined to stop in the rain, thats when i found out about WD40.The subframe was useless in most 1100's as well so after 10 months I changed to a Singer Vogue 5011JI,oh how I wish I had it now
Bye

Mine was a 1965 Vauxhall Victor 101, had been bodge converted from auto to manual, bought it in 1973 for £100. Didn't have it very long, as I wrote it off by colliding with an air compressor. Below is a picture of a similar one of the same colour.

Nice reg. plate, take out the numbers and you have "NUKE"... :-rofl2

I saw an old Austin 1800 today. It was the manky mustard colour. Quite why the designers thought a car painted the same shade as dog sick would be trendy has never been explained!

Ahh, that brings back memories, a colleague of mine was made to drive a "Dog sick" coloured 1800 after getting his license back, as a punishment years ago. :-rofl2

For those folk wondering what on earth we are on about heres the car in question.

Look at the delightful vomit colour. The sleek lines that look like a poor mans Austin Maxi. The --- oh forget it they should all have been rounded up and crushed years ago :-rofl2

If anyone is looking for SLN561L it was just down the road this afternoon!

Was also mini....... I ermm modified it somewhat by mating an MG 1100 engine to the original gearbox with an 1100 clutchplate and single downdraft Weber carb fitted with code blue needle and blue spring IIRC. I once beat a Triumph TR7 from 0 - 60, but my car's top speed was 68 mph so he soon passed me again. The engine had so much torque you could set off up hill in 2nd gear.

Yep, I recognise that colour, a mate of mine had the 1100 in the same. He drove it on L-plates until the boys in blue gave him some points for driving without a licence. It saved walking to school though, and had a whiny gearbox.

My very first car was an Austin A35. I also bought a damaged MG Midget with the intention of fitting the engine, gearbox and brakes to the A35.

I drove the A35 for a few weeks (so it was my first car!) and then looked at it and looked at the Midget. The A35 had been such a pig to get through the MOT (even back then!) with its hydromechanical brakes that I decided to get the Midget running and scrapped the A35.

I don't need to use the DVLA site to see if it's still on the road as I am always the last of a car. Well almost always, I can only think of two that I sold. One I know was scrapped shortly afterwards and the other one was just a brief ownership when I needed a car for a weekend - I can't even remember its registration number! I cooked the engine when the radiator ran dry. The new owner said he was going to get it going but I doubt it!
