What's the chance of getting allowed to install a 3.8m dish in the U.K?

I might move to the U.K next year and wanted to ask you if it is possible to get allowance from the local council or authorites to install a 3.8m antenna in the garden or on the roof?

Please see attached pics, this is the antenna i am considering for C/KU-band as i need to get Thor and Viasat on the west coast of the U.K or i might even end up on Ireland, i don't know yet.:confused

In most areas you would struggle, but I guess it would depend on local siting and impact, on the roof would probably be a real no no.

Can't speak for what it's like in Ireland, but I guess that the more remote your are, the more chance you have, unless of course you can find a living unit on an industrial estate. :)

dude thats hell of a dish!!! lol

firstly anything above 1m you need planning permission.

if you live in a housing estate then the answer is no, nobody will aprove of it not unless the neighbours can convince that they are ok with it.

another thing is this type of permission is usally allowed for certain needs with dish's that size (i.e not for picking up a few extra satellites as a hobby).

maybe if you lived in a big open area they might allow it but i cannot see this happening, not unless you have reason for it

The chances of getting planning permission for something that big even hereis remote. - Im only 2 miles from the local town :D

I dont think Id try anything bigger than a 1.2m here - the neighbours think Im peculiar anyway :-rofl2

You could always insist that it is your European Human Right to be able to recieve broadcasts in your own mother tongue. If the application gets rejected then insist that an alternative is provided, then sit back and wait for a 'review' of the original application.

That might be you then :-rofl2

You have the whole field in front of you, can install it in the field so you have a nice view every morning you go outside.

I am getting over to the UK for two weeks in June.

what i want to know is how you are going to get it over here lol the second customs take 1 look at that they will think.......who is this guy does he work for NASSA or something lol.

Yeah you could try putting it up if you are living somewhere in the country out the way with nobody around, that way you wont have people to complain but if you get found out then obviously people will be curious.

As for the human rights idea you can already pick up swedish satellites with a smaller sized dish so that ones out the window but a nice idea.

I still want to see the guys face when he comes around to check your dish size for planning permission lol ohh man lol.

As i say your best bet is if you are going to live in the countryside then try and set it up without being found out. If you are going to live in a town/city area then id say sell the dish over there and get a 1m or something over here.

I will not use it for KU-band only but getting back to C-band again and 1 meter dish is not even fun for Ku-band.

The dish is not in one piece, its 12 segments.

Can be installed on the pole by 1 person :-worship

You assemble piece by piece, it looks larger than it is.

Channel Hopper lives in the UK and have i beleive a 4 meter dish.

sounds good dude but yeah if im honest you better off selling it and getting something smaller.

If you do get permission i want to know, it will be interesting to see what comes of this.

Very interesting indded as ive not seen a dish this size been wanting to be set up over here before.

Aahhh..... so the guy in the photo is a munchkin.:D

It would certainly take some hiding! Maybe in a derelict barn without a roof. Although you will get wet when in rains - which is most of the time.:)

i think you'd need to live in the country side and i would say 1.8metre would be the max you'd be able to get away with without any neighbours near

or move next to skys uplink centre and put it in there lol

makes me laugh places like spain and greece you can have a 4 metre dish and no ones bothered

would you be able to pickup 61west with that 3.8metre on west coast of ireland ?

i thought the fibo dish was enough for you

west coast of uk a andrews 1.8metre would get 1west and 5east surely ? as i'm sure rd100 gets them in south wales on a 1.8m prodelin dish

Only enough because i live in an apartment and i can not have bigger.

If i lived in a house i would have had a 4 meter dish a long time ago.

I used to have a 3.1m dish in my house where i lived with my parents way back in the early 90's.

I know somebody in Notts that has a 2.2 dish up in his drive in the middle of an estate He had the council sniffing round a bit ago, but because the dish had been up for seven years without any complaints from the neighbours, they couldn't make him take it down, it's just classed as an 'illegal structure'

Town councils can sometimes be easier to deal with than parish councils (parish councils cover countryside village / small towns)

You will need to blend the dish into the surrounding (paint it) You can apply for retospective permission. Thus install it and wait for the day they come knocking. Then apply for permission...

yeah gives me an idea, have a painted dish competition lol, if its out the way nobody should be worried really, but as i said just dont request the permission, wait and if after a few years nobody has said out them you might be fine.
And as wod said if you are going to live in a town you will always get 1 moaner who puts spanner in the works.

i live in a housing estate in dublin, ireland and while i was out walking the other day i spotted a dish that was at least 2.5m in a back garden around the corner. i have 2 dishes on the back of the house and am planning to put up another one, i dont expect to have any problems. you should see the size of some of the dishes that have been mounted on the front of rented accomadation around dublin. i assume these are put up by our eastern european friends who want to get their home channels. i have never heard of anyone being asked to remove a dish by the city council or anyone else.
