I read on some forum that it got certain amount of play since it uses worm drive etc, is it true, someone had problems with this motor losing signal on hi wind?

Probably not, it is the SMR 1224 to be precise. :)

I think most of the positioners will have a worm drive somewhere inside them, it's an easy way to get the high gear ratio needed. Most of them only need something like 0.5 rpm on the dish arm.

How much play is a matter of design/adjustment, and probably price. :)

What we want is a nice 'harmonic drive' gearbox, - high gear ratio, very stiff, very little play, very quiet, - but price would probably rule them out. :D
