Why there needs to be a new dedicated cable for audio

With Audio jack cable and AV cables on there way out, isn't it time that manufacturers brought out a new global standard in audio cables? Yes there is Optical Cables which are Digital and work fine but at the moment the only cable compatible with 7.1 Dolby Atmos is a cable designed for video (HDMI cable). Just food for thought.
