I serioulsy cannot see any benefit in this. If I am watching live TV and I need to go out, or go to the loo, I stick a video tape in. :D

How can a unit be sold with the slogan "NOW YOU PAUSE LIVE TV."

Big deal. :-doh2U-zzz:)

You obviously haven't used it. :)

I use it all the time, it is great, I really don't want to be bothered with getting my VCR out of the loft and dusting off a tape, then having to wait until the programme has ended to watch the rest of it.

With my Sky+ or Freeview PVR I can pause the TV, go to the loo, go and grab a beer out of the fridge, or make a cup of tea, then return and start to watch again, fast forwarding through the adverts until I am back in real time. :)

I can also be recording another channel whilst all this is going on. :)

Yeah, that's all well and good Rolfw, but in the mean time we all have to twiddle our thumbs until you've finished doing your little jobs and return.

Yeah, but after you've paused it, it's no longer live TV if you restart it where you left off. You're then watching recorded live TV> :D

Well time shifted would be a more accurate description. ;)

However, the ability to taper the time difference by using the fast forward during commercials until eventually returning to live viewing, is something not really achievable with a vcr. :)

I have yet to meet someone who has upgraded to Sky plus or any other PVR receiver, who doesn't think that it has enhanced their viewing.

I suppose if you have it you use it. But it wouldn't make me buy it just because of that. Hardly any programmes are live anyway. :)

True, but the TV companies aren't going to hold transmission of a programme especially for you.

pausing live tv is great when you're watching tv and something unexpected happens, like the telephone ringing or someone at the front door. Just press pause and continue viewing when you've dealt with the culprit.
a video tape - what's that ?

Seriously, nothing is that IMPORTANT on TV. If it is, it's always repeated anyway. ;)

I just know somebody will claim their small room antics can take up to three hours (my record is 96 minutes followed by a shower) Just how long can live pause be used on the modern machines ?

Horses and water springs to mind. ;)

If nothing on TV is that important, then I guess that the VCR should be thrown out as well. ;)

Can you imagine -

Viewer: Hello, is this BBC One programming controller?

BBC lady: Yes, how may I help?

Viewer: Could you just pause Eastenders for me while I go for a dump?

BBC lady: No, f*** off.

Personaly i never use timeshifting.... why? If I start timeshifting, the recorded quality will be lower and this old pc almost burns it self to do that :-doh!
And what's the logic? Imagine that I'm watching football and I pause the game to go to the phone for example. 1 advantage, I don't loose anything, disadvantage? I only see benfica's goals 30 minutes after it happens and all neighborhood it's celebrating the victory, while I'm waiting for the goal..... And live tv, if it's paused, it's not live tv...
But if we are watching a movie, it would be nice to enable timeshifting and we can see the movie without comercials (if there are) and make some pauses for getting more popcorns

Even with live football it is useful, as you can always fast forward through the bad bits (loads of them with Benfica ;)) and half time to catch up. :)
