Thanks - had a look at that, and it "looks" very similar to item number 5055920556248 on ebay.co.uk, although that could be pretty different on the inside!

In total, I've order 3x dongles so far - each of which is supposed to work with one of the other receivers - , and so I'll be interested to see if any of them also work in the Solo2. ATM, to me, the most likely should be the Octagon one which is supposed to work with the SX88 - and that being Linux-based, might seem to indicate that the same dongle would work with the Solo2.

That's why I recommend the Vonets, it does not need a driver and it works with everyone.

Update: The Octagon WL008 dongle arrived today, and that works in the SX88, the Freesat V7 HD, the TM5402 M3 and, I think, the OpenBox V8S - not sure about the latter because it is connecting to the Wifi but then not to anything else!

OTOH, was going to try the Vu+ Solo2 - but the HMDI on that appears to have gone "dead" so maybe that's the end for that box (and yes, I've tried changing HDMI leads and so on) .

2x more cheap dongles still on order - nominally for the FreeSat (will be a couple of weeks or so) and the Openbox (maybe later this week), and then I'll order another cheap one for the remaining box (whichever that turns out to be).

This cheap one (£2.92), nominally for the Openbox, arrived today, stuck it first into the SX88 (which had already been set up with the Octagon WL008) and it connected to the WiFi without need for any further actions.

Then tried it in the Freesat and the TM, and again it connected without any further actions (although the TM got a different IP address to the other 2 receivers), and I think it will do the same with the Openbox Box because all of these dongles appear to use similar Ralink chipsets. OTOH, it's a pretty tight fit into any of the USB sockets, and it was reluctant to fit the one on the Freesat until after it had been "run-in" by fitting it to the SX88.

Edited: now fitted in the Openbox V8S, and it works - but only after manually switching the Wifi on (apparently will need to do that everytime after the Rx is powered OFF!), whereas the other 3 boxes automatically turned it on when powered up.

In the circumstances, I will order another of the same for as that will give me a complete set (the Vu+ apart, because the HDMI on that seems totally dead - looks like all that one is good for is to rescue the 1TB disk inside to attach to something else )

The final one, nominally for the Freesat, is coming from China and won't arrive for a couple of weeks - but will post an overall summary

PS: given how this thread has "developed" it might be a good idea to retitle it as "Just Sharing"

Update - I was going to junk the Solo2 as it has a dead HDMI port, but have now got the m/c outputing from the SCART socket to a SCART-to-HDMI adapter like this one - needs a 5V supply but comes with a USB lead for that and luckily there are 2 USB ports on the rear panel.

That bit was quite easy, but getting it to work with a WiFi dongle in the other rear panel USB port was not because it seems that this receiver - certainly when running OpenVix 4 - is very "picky" as to the chipsets it will support and I couldn't even find a suitable driver for an RTI8192 chip set dongle when I told it to download the driver plugins (via the wired LAN). Finally got it to work with the Octagon WL008 mentioned above!

Then installed the latest version of OpenVix Gen 5 but still have to transfer the latest Cateye channel list (although not today!)

This is a great little thread for info, anyway for my two pence worth I have the cheap "Open box" package branded one with the actual aerial and a "cool blue" coloured LED, started life from new in the Xtrend 9500HD and was compatible with the per installed drivers that were within the Vix image after the Xtrend death I plugged the dongle into the Mutant and it was recognised upon first boot and was available as a choice for network use during the setup wizard during first installation. Catseye channel list? Best one

@Ghostleader
Thanks for the input - FWIW, I don't need (in fact, I didn't want for space reasons) dongles with external antennas because the boxes are less than 1m from the router.
Catseye files came via another forum!

I always wonder how much of a difference an actual aerial antenna makes compared to flat band type thats in the wee stub adapters.

I think it depends on how well the various types are designed - though I would have thought you probably do get better range with external antennas as the signals to/from them are less likely to get blocked by metal, including receiver cases, between the antenna and the router.

This is OT for this thread but I thought I'd mention it as it seems like a good place to leave it :) We chucked out a Samsung TV a few weeks ago, it was only about four years old but the screen had died. Anyway it had a USB WiFi dongle on it for the Smart features, out of interest I plugged it into my W10 PC and it installed using RALINK drivers, it connected to my router at 72MB!

An external antenna for long range applications is all ways the best bet, however most do not understand that the small thin coax that comes with some of the external antennas if needed to be extended almost defeats the added gain.

At 2.5 or 5 GHz the coax used can make or break the application,(due to the extreme coax signal loss at those frequency's) this is why I mount the USB WIFI device in a water tight box as close to the antenna (if used for an outdoor application) then run it off an active USB extension cable.

Some of the USB WIFI devices need more DC power then can be supplied by a standard USB port, in this case an externally DC powered USB hub can be used, the USB hub can also be co-located in the same box as the USB WIFI device.

Another way is to use a USB to LAN converter, also a POE over CAT5/6, this way you can mount the setup as far away as 100 meters. (i have done this)

Great info, but "luckily" most of us in the UK don't need a long Wifi range (our properties are not that "large"!) - in my case, as I said earlier, the sat boxes are <1m from the router!

Just some info for those who might want to try.

I've done WIFI up to 15 KM, hill top to hill top.

Why not use an updated xml file, and just scan the channels in.

Far more accurate that way :Y
