The former upgrade offer did not at all go according to plan (fast killing of 7 & 8). Even for free and an immense propaganda campaign the vast majority of windows users refused to touch it, so how many in the future will pay for installing the crap?

So they have to keep some 'free' channel open, and will probably later come up with some new upgrade tricks. Would all have been much easier if they actually produced a good windows that people like and want to use :O)

Nothing wrong with Windows 10.

Good, simple, fast system that puts right all the things I used to loathe about Windows - to the extent that our Household went Linux only for a few years.

It's a joy to use.

You mean like the Hansel & Grettel fairy tale of the little girl and the witch in the wood - all smiles and come-ons on the outside, but beware what lies hidden behind that door?
(bit like your avatar maybe ?:-lol)

I have moved 3 machines to it (1 still reversible at the moment) because I need more experience with it, and rolled back two others on a wait and see basic because, like it or not, I will probably have to live with some iteration of W10 for a lot of the future - but the 3x m/cs still on W10 have had the ShutUP10 treatment to try to minimise that stuff that lies hidden (and there is actually quite a lot of that I really really don't like)

and very strange that some fall for it... :)

Maybe that's the "enhanced customer experience" MS jabber about. That said, I like the basic w10 OS itself, got solid muscles and teeth, but this being reason to let it freely enter one's house is another question.

I feel honoured to find myself in the dog/sheep/mutant-throwback house for liking W10, especially after so many years of hating anything and everything from Micros**t.

As oft debated elsewhere, the downsides can easily be dispensed, but I suppose once people take agin it, nowt will change their mind.

There must be some attraction, though, or why even mention it? ;)

Windows 10 is far better now, things like cctv dvr now works, without installing active x.

Not sure that I don't like it, or won't like it in the end - probably will learn to "love it" (at least to a degree - my wife seems fairly happy so far, but then her desktop still looks just the same and all the applications still appear to work after fixing Kaspersky and a couple of other things) as it undoubtedly brings quite a lot more functionality to the OS in many areas.

It's just, as many of us and others have said, that we don't like the very underhanded way that all those "other functions" get foisted on the unaware without their knowledge, and what MS, or their commercial customers, might do with all that info that it is mining from them.

I agree, but as has been said many times, on the various W10 Threads, you can stop all the carp.

Personally, I'd be far more concerned about the likes of Google and Amazon.

Not to mention EDF.

(Which I didn't, obviously :D )

Of course, one day it'll be the only windows. Got to adjust to reality and learn to know it, and am enjoying the research (also gives an opportunity to make some (hopefully) funny posts).

Have done a dozen installs of different iterations on different pc's, waiting to test the 'anniversary' version when it's out in a few days. OS is stable, fast etc as it should be and needs to be, that's not a problem. It's about the MS telemetry-wolf that comes along (and offers candy(crush) to ensnare unsuspecting victims).

Here's a 'small' list of things that can be done ;O)

IMHO if you can live with G00gles spying you have nothing to fear from win 10 spying

But just my opinion

Although I'm not crazy about the telemetry I must be honest I don't really care that much either. Maybe I should, but I don't. I've disabled most of the things MS has let me but I haven't bothered to install any extras to disable telemetry.

I'm a little more concerned about the fact that MS can and will change or remove certain features over time whether I like it or not.

So far after using Win 10 for a few weeks I've found it pretty good but then I am running it on a brand new reasonably high end laptop after running XP on an old laptop for many years, so it's not really fair for me to compare.

It's certainly a lot better than Win 8 that I've had the "pleasure" of using on other people's computers.

A funny thing just happened to me on my way to Windows 10!

Not sure if I mentioned this but I actually blew up the first Acer N4620g ( I think it was ESD when I refitted a disk:mad: )! Then, like a real sucker, I went and bought another one because I need to do some experiments with online digital photo storage - but that had a WIN 7 Pro key (when I finally got it out of the supplier, and that's a story in itself!) but no actual OS installed.

After a lot of wasted time (loaded from non-SP1 disk, and it really did not want to fully update and kept reverting to the original installation level - so finally had to load all the 200+ updates in batches of 10 after WSUS offline update did not want to play ball) I eventually got 7 Pro installed and running steadily today. So I then decided to try to upgrade it to 10 Pro - on the assumption that I would have to use the "assistive technologies" workaround to get it activated. However, after a long and protracted automated installation procedure (from a USB key) it all loaded up and so I had a look at the Activation tab in Control Panel Systems - and it tells me that it IS already activated without me doing anything!

Wonder how long this will last, has someone been giving duff info on the need to use the workaround - or has Microsoft finally, but quietly, made the upgrade free and without strings? (And I also noticed that there are a huge number of WIN 10 licences available on ebay - and probably elsewhere - for only a few quid).

Thats a symptom of already it was activated as win10 during the free upgrade. Even if its then subsequently downgraded (upgraded? :D) to win7 the activation stands.

Could well be the case - so that would mean that if you have/can find W7/W8 disks with a valid Product Key then, provided you install & activate that before "updating", then you can still move "up" to W10 f.o.c. - never seen that "feature" mentioned anywhere before and I guess that most others also have not.

Plenty of free win7 activation genuine key generators on the web thingy.

Had a version of win 7 activated by this method, upgraded to similar version win 10 and tested for 3 months, tried to revert to win 7 but revert option outdated, wiped the win 10 with killdisk bootable disk, then reloaded win 7and used the free activator key generator to get a genuine windows version , and it updates no prob.:-doh

Edit

OOOOOps forgot to mention it was 2 days before all got back to normal again, but there again have numerous pc`s:-rofl2

Probably need to be aware that some of those generated keys might just be corporate ones - which can "expire" if MS pulls the plug on them as did one that I had a few years ago. Worth knowing about those generators (previously I had not) nevertheless :D

PS: are there similar code generators for Office (specifically the 2010 version)?

I ask because one of my Office 2010 installations is from a disk obtained quite legitimately at the time as I got it when I worked for a company with a corporate agreement which allowed employees to get the Enterprise Edition at rock bottom prices - but that company is now long defunct, and, the last time I tried to install a new feature from it, gave the message that it could not be installed, and I assume is because MS has blocked any new use of that particular Product Key (although MS updates to the existing installation still do work).

@skomedal (& @A/S)

That jogged a thought: the PC I installed on is about 4 years old and was almost certainly a corporate one, and so the key would have been validated at the beginning.

OTOH, this still does appear to make a mockery of the statements that MS was making last year that if you did not claim the "free upgrade" for your m/c by the date in Sept then you would not be able to after that date - and yet I, and presumably yourself (and others) , have managed to do it many months further on!

OTOH2, could it be because Win 7 Pro support extends until 2020, and so MS feels that they need to keep the door open for Pro Users - and their companies - until then?
