skomedal (sorry, misread the post the first time around)

There are so many threads on the forum that, sometimes, things inevitably get duplicated - particularly when something is in a thread that bears no obvious relationship to what the OP (me in this case) is thinking at the time - anyway, this one might be drifting someway in the direction that means you don't need to use the workaround as I'm still curious to find out what happened to activate my latest W10 upgrade.

Having reread that post - as you requested!- I'm not sure that is the case because the m/c in question was obviously a corporate unit that came with a Win 8 (NOT 10) Pro sticker on it - so I'm fairly sure that it never got a WIN 10 upgrade before I bought it from the IT recycling company which supplied it as why would they not bother to advertise the fact in the ebay Ad that it would be easily upgradeable to 10 (in fact they made a very clear statement that no OS was installed).

OTOH, maybe MS has an arrangement with the corporate unit resellers to provide additional genuine keys that can be used on the machines they supply on, and could they now only be supplying/permitting Win 10 keys (I have no idea how those arrangements work)?

BTW: this posted linked in the Alphr email I just got talks about the Assistive technologies workaround
You can still upgrade to Windows 10 for free

And it says that
"
Upgrading to Windows 10 for free
If you want to make use of Microsoft’s Windows 10 assistive technologies you need to make sure you’re running an eligible version of Windows. The upgrade only applies to those running Windows 7 Home or Home Premium with Service Pack 1 or higher installed and Windows 8.1. Windows 7 Enterprise, Windows 8/8.1 Enterprise and Windows RT/RT 8.1 are all excluded from the free upgrade."

So the workaround does not appear to work for the Enterprise (and thus also Pro?) versions (for presumably understandable reasons!)

As skomedal appears to have "opted out" of further contributions to this thread, does anyone else know where those "microsoft criteria" can be found because (obviously!) I don't because I'm not AT ALL sure to what he refers?

From another site

FOR CLOUD SUBSCRIBERS WITH WINDOWS 7 AND 8.1
Your business needs to meet two criteria to receive the free Windows 10 upgrade.

You must:
If you can tick both these boxes, you can now upgrade to Windows 10 without having to buy an upgrade licence.

And it gets better. If you decide to cancel your CSP subscription in future, you can still keep your Windows 10 licenses. They’re associated with the PC or device you install them on, not your CSP subscription.

Thanks - I'd be interested to find out if that applied to the machine in question that I have but I won't be able to because it has been through at least 2 changes of ownership (the company that originally bought/leased it, and then the recycling company that wiped the hard disk before selling it to me) since it had Win 8 Pro (per the label on it) on it and providing with a Win 7 Pro Product Key by the recycling company (and, finally, after having to send a "reminder", I got the actual label from them!).

Wonder if that recycling company is also part of the CSP, but, again, I won't be able to find that out (there is now a very "sour" relationship between them and me after the lengths I had to go to to get the Product Key!).

So why the Product Key on this machine was automatically activated will stay a bit of a mystery - but at least I now have a better idea of why it might have. Thanks again to all who provided the info.
