I'm right behind you guys - just as soon as you've had it working sweetly for a month, I'll be thinking about downloading it!

This is certainly a big deal for me, but like you guys, I'm fairly well protected already. I rely heavily on making lots of secure backups to DVD and trialling anything remotely dodgy on a quarantined machine first for a few days.

Also, Polomint found a very interesting article from MS (posted here somewhere) which basically said that MS has decided that for the time being it's better for all XP users, that keygenned versions of XP get SP2 so as to prevent the spread of nasties and thus help to protect legit-key users with no SP2.

In fact I think that it's as much to do with WU5 as SP2, and I regard them as going very much hand in hand.

Just a thought - maybe this thread should be made sticky?!?!

I've gone for it and PC working ok. There's some cosmetic problems with 'Security Center', like whatever you choose to do with the internal firewall it shows as 'ON'. I've switched it off AFAIK. Let's see how it goes.

Do you have a legit key (product ID), or did you generate one when you installed XP?

just a little update to this thread.

ive found out that there is a patch in this pack that contains a huge list of web pages that stops you visiting these web pages,as far as i know this is a list of web sites that have had a huge amount of complaints about and bill gates has given the go ahead to put this in your registery so you can not visit these.
obviously these are maybe places that people dont visit or want to but i dont like the way microsoft is now telling you where you can or not go reguardless of there content without most people even knowing.
next they will be telling you at what time of the day you can visit a web site.

Oh I see..sorry mate. Legit key. The operating system is one where I've always had a legit key. Anything else not too bothered.

Spyware interferes with Service Pack 2

Though Microsoft's new security update package is all about protecting systems from worms, viruses and spyware, it can't do much about what's already on computers -- and that could pose a problem, CNN reports.

Microsoft is warning users of the Windows XP operating system to check for spyware before downloading the free massive security update, called Service Pack 2.

Barry Goff, a group product manager at Microsoft, said some spyware could cause computers to freeze up upon installation of the update.

Programs such as Ad-Aware and SpySweeper can scour computers for spyware. Microsoft recommends that users clean their PCs of spyware and back up their data before turning on the auto update feature that automatically downloads Service Pack 2, or SP2.

My pointer has been hovering over the 'install' button for a week now.
Spyware, Explorer, firewalls - I'm feeling paranoid. Can you use system restore after installing if things go haywire?
