Will try and install Goldtach again, it may have become corrupted by SP2. :)

PS removed the offer. ;)

I run an HP Omnibook 6100 and there are separate volume and mute switches on the side of the case. Before the upgrade these would bring up a volume bar or mute sign on the screen for a few moments when operated. Now,they've gone.
Guess what - it's back. I didn't knowingly do anything but I'm not knocking it!

My mate installed SP2 and lost his ADSL connection. He ended up re-installing XP. (Lost some part of modem driver in the an *ini file he told me) But as a thought could you run system restore to the point prior to installing to get back up and running again? Also 3rd party firewalls like zone alarm could conflict with xp firewall.

I did a fresh XP install, then XP2, then ZAP, and all was peachy. :D

But you're right. Turn off XP firewall.

For anyone that is interested my ISP had this in their newsletter today. I use 2K so I do not know how much info you have to divulge to make it legit but this is the article from the ZEN newletter

REPLACEMENT WINDOWS
Microsoft is offering to replace counterfeit copies of Windows XP with the genuine article - completely free of charge. The scheme is exclusive to the UK and runs for the next 30 days. Aiming to "help people and small businesses that have been innocently duped by high quality forgeries", the initiative is designed to get information from users to help track down gangs of counterfeiters who are flooding the pre-Christmas market with high quality XP forgeries sold in convincing packaging complete with copies of the company's holographic logo.

Suspicious processor activity ..... My system is Windows XP with service pack 1. AVG free edition (manual updates and scanning). Zone alarm free (online access granted to only recognised programs). I have frequently noticed my processor working hard without apparent reason.. The circumstances would be - I will be online (dial-up connection) with my monitor on standby. I move my mouse and inevitably the processor activity will return to normal just before my monitor screen is visible. I am extremely cautious about Trojans and viruses (having had much experience of). I would be very interested to hear any suggestions as to reasons why my processor would behave in this way. My suspicion is that it may be responding to external stimuli. Incidentally if you do Webcamnow don't ever give them access to your main hard drive as 13 gigabytes of my data disappeared while chatting at the site (luckily it was backed up).

I wonder if someone could lend me the XP SP2 CD.

After downloading some software it damaged a part of SP2 and I need a CD to repair the damage. I tried PC World but they don't have any, so if some kind person is willing to lend me the disc I would be very grateful.
Will return after repair.
Thanks Rob.

Hi Rob
Whilst being a W2K guy at home I have XP Pro at work. I just logged into my network and onto my machine and did a search for SP2 and sure enough it revealed that the SP2 that was downloaded onto my machine using Windows automatic update was still held on the machine as a winzip backup. It should be in two places but in mine it was in C:\Windows\ServicePackFiles\i386. So what ever file it is asking for you should be able to point it to the corresponding location on your machine. Hope this helps

Thanks for your replies and PM's, and to Polomint who is lending me his copy of XP SP2 CD.
I have sent off to Microsoft for the CD, but as Jimbo points out it can take 4-6 weeks.
This problem started after I downloaded a program for downloading music, video etc, and it has replaced something on SP2, which switches the download off after about five minutes which makes life a little difficult.

If someone ever needs to repair SP2 you will need the CD. On my PC I just followed the "Delete" program and you are given the choice delete or repair, but then you must insert the SP2 CD.
What happens then I will let you know, when I get Polomint's CD.

i would like to make a quick suggestion if using XP SP2 i would turn off system restore as good old MS forgot to mention that the $WINDOWS$ ini temp folder when installing is in conflict with the system restore ini. if anyone has a problem on a repair email me i have tools on disk allowing you to repair alot better from the disk you boot from cd to it then lets you disable all services then you can repair or uninstall SP2 alot safer we have to do this at lots of various clients premises as they upgraded and shot themselves in foot. If you are still unsure about SP2 email me your machine specs and progs you have and i can let you know how to get best results from if poss.

I thought the whole idea of XP was that everytime you did an install the PC created a restore point and you could if everything failed to install properly ( as happened to me in Israel a few weeks ago) you just then go to Windows help, restore and select the date to go back to. It did, for me actually work OK, twice in two weeks!!!!

give a little while and you will see my freind not much at first a few sillylittle issuses then they start getting worse from then on. you may be a lucky one it dos happen with MS but it is very hit and miss affair. MS in its very nature works inwards rather than out like linux by that i mean all progs work into the system rather than from the system if you get my drift. Dont get me wrong i have alot of dealings with XP in work life everyday and on balance is not to bad but you must fight with it all the time its too automated for me thus no control. Win2k on the other hand is very good MS best OS in my eyes.
take care my freinds and have a good weekend
regards

Thanks Polomint received SP2 CD, and guess what when I started program to uninstall/repair Service Pack 2, it started to uninstall no repair.
Never even got the chance to insert CD, but will keep trying. :(

Topper, thought about using the restore point (never used it before) but decided on the repair as I was worried that after using the restore point my music program would disappear.
Any idea's on that ? :confused

Hi Rob it states in the help blurb that any data stored on your HD after the restore point you choose to go back to will remain intact. Here is the blurb copied from the website
System Restore enables administrators to restore their computers to a previous state without losing personal data files (e.g. Word documents, graphic files, e-mail). System Restore actively monitors system file changes and some application file changes to record or store previous versions before the changes occurred. Users never have to think about taking system snapshots as System Restore automatically creates easily identifiable restore points, which the users can use to revert to a previous time. Restore points are created at the time of significant system events (such as application or driver install) and periodically (each day). Additionally, users can create and name their own restore points at any time. For more information, please see the System Restore document on TechNet.
Hope this helps

I always turn System Restore off as soon as I build a box. It saves a shedload of space.

If you have a minor problem, then you don't need to resort to using it (it's a bit sledgehammer to crack a walnut) whereas if it's a major problem, it probably won't work anyway.

It certainly never did for me. POS! Goback's nearly as bad.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again. The best way to protect yourself from a major system calamity is to perform regular backups using a quality product.

I currently use Acronis True Image. Why not try it? It's really very slick.
