I had quite a few updates yesterday, but have done no registry hacks.

Sorry, just checked, they are all Office updates, apart from one, which is the windows Genuine Advantage.

My XP machine lives in the shed,so dosn't get used much and then mostly to look on the forum.Still updating though. It is telling me that four are waiting to be installed. There were some last week too.
Re. MS stopping these update .Perhaps they can't because they are for Enterprise versions of XP.
I notice that the fix is all over the net now,so I would not be surprised if they are now working on a way to tell the difference between enterprise and private versions.

Are you sure that it was the operating system that was being updated and not one of the applications?

Im pretty sure they were part of the O/S. The malware removal tool is still being updated as well - thats come down tonight

Got one update last night on the laptop, and after retarting, MSE has disappeared completely fromt he start menu and bottom bar, so it may be the end of the 'service'.

Look out for KB3011780

The second patch, MS14-068/KB 3011780 is one of the two patches Microsoft skipped last week. This one fixes another problem with Kerberos, and it sounds pretty nasty:
[The vulnerability will] allow an attacker to elevate unprivileged domain user account privileges to those of the domain administrator account. An attacker could use these elevated privileges to compromise any computer in the domain, including domain controllers. An attacker must have valid domain credentials to exploit this vulnerability. The affected component is available remotely to users who have standard user accounts with domain credentials; this is not the case for users with local account credentials only. When this security bulletin was issued, Microsoft was aware of limited, targeted attacks that attempt to exploit this vulnerability.

Odd, updates for MSE should be available on XP until 14 July 2015.

What happens with the banks that were still running xp on many, many ATM machines? In the news report I read they were still paying M.S. for extended support beyond "end of life" for xp on these machines.

SpAsda as well, I f#*king hate Walmart so if there could be some kind of Y2K melt down due to their lack of planning/spending money then that would be just dandy :-)

I'd imagine it's a widespread potential problem. 15 plus years ago we used to work with a lot of independent cash & carry wholesalers who are not renowned for the depths of their pockets and it was only then that they were switching to PC tills from the green screen 'dumb' terminals that they'd been using until then. I can't see them forking out willingly for an OS upgrade with the consequent; 'this cash drawer/printer/display etc. is no longer compatible.'

We still have one elderly XP laptop in use here - solely for swmbo to run one flaky pos bit of software for her family history hobby which absolutely flat out refuses to run under any more modern o/s no matter what I do to try to trick it into working.

The missus is under no illusions about what I will do to this antiquated wreck of a laptop if I ever find its been anywhere near the modern internet :-rofl2

Ref the pos s/w only running on XP, have you tried loading XP into a virtual machine on another PC - got XP running under VMware free on both the 64 bit W7 Ultimate laptop and 64 bit W10 Pro nettop, with few problems (does need an XP Product Key), in order to load a 1990-vintage card game to which I am somewhat "addicted" :-rofl2

and all have installed successfully, with the exception of KB2686509 which is something to do with a keyboard log issue (unless somebody knows different).

Are there records available from anywhere confirming a computer has been hacked using a vulnerability before patching, since the release date is getting on for seven years old.20190305_083145.jpg20190305_083302.jpg

It's interesting that your XP version is the "Embedded" one - I'm guessing that MS kept releasing updates to that for a long time after it stopped releasing updates for consumer versions because it was used in many industrial "embedded" systems.
