For anyone wanting Windows-XP service-pack1, it was released today by Microsoft.

Here at their official server
http://premierdownload.microsoft.com/download/whistler/SP/SP1/WXP/en-us/xpsp1_en_x86.exe

It's 135MB big so watch out for the phone bill.

Also watch out if you have a pirate version of XP (or blacklisted product-id). Early reports suggest that installing SP1 will then fail and disable XP altogether (prevents reboot).

Are there any obvious benefits to this service pack 2old? Many of the past updates from big M, admittedly for Win98se caused more problems than they solved.

If you have been keeping up to date with Windows Update then it should pick up the SP1 pack by itself and it will only be about 10-20Mb+ (depending on how up to date with the updates you are)

It allows you to uninstall IE and MSN and all the other crap completely and simply, you also have more ‘control’ over your settings and browser etc. However if you have power toys etc installed and have ‘dealt’ with MSN already there is not all that much in it.

It also comes with a heap of security patches, but again if you have been running Windows Update you will have picked up most of them already.

And yes, anyone with the FCKGW…(or however it goes) serial will find their system will not boot into XP. Formatting and reinstalling will of course bring it back but it is a bit of a hassle. Not sure about other cracked versions, that seemed to be the main one.

Haven’t tried it on my machine, and won’t be able to, well not for some time ;)

I recently installed XP and became immediately suspicious. The first thing I looked for was an antispy prog'. I dont know if anyone has it, vouches for it, or this post is old hat?
