YouTube is undoubtedly the most popular video-sharing site on the planet with an average of over three billion views a day, which is 50% more than in 2010. This past year, after having been acquired by Google, the site saw 48 hours worth of video being uploaded each day, a 100% increase year on year in the amount of videos uploaded per day.

To mark the end of its hugely successful year, the site just released the list of the 10 most watched YouTube videos of 2011. While some might argue that plenty of people look for quality entertainment when online, the YouTube list proves that many people still prefer user generated videos.

It comes as a surprise to no one that Rebecca Black's annoyingly popular song, Friday, wins as the most watched video of the year globally. With 180 million views that resulted in Black signing a record deal and becoming one of the few Internet sensations to make it on talk shows, those who initially rolled their eyes at the stupidity of the song can now roll their eyes at the fact that Black has become a celebrity.

Following Black at number two is the Ultimate Dog Tease video, which was the most watched video in the UK, features a talking dog who is flabbergasted that his owner gave his food to the cat. On his heels with 60 million views is Michael Bolton's crazy Pirates of the Caribbean fan that was a part of his SNL stint, and closely behind at 56 million are the talking twin babies. They are joined in the top 10 by the Nyan cat and a Star Wars spoof.

In the UK, the T-Mobile ad which spoofed the royal wedding came in second, a mash up of interviews of Charlie Sheen came in third. A Britain's Got Talent video that featured a contestant singing Fast Car sits at number five.

“The 10 most-watched YouTube videos of 2011 show that around the world, whatever language we speak, there are certain things that bring us all together around a computer screen or mobile phone,” said Kevin Allocca, trends manager for YouTube. “– adorable babies, talented performers and clever advertising.”

With things only getting better and better for the site, 2012 is sure to be another big year full of both hilarious and heart-warming videos. Though many pray the likes of Rebecca Black all drop their cameras in a lake.
