hi
i just bought a surround sound system and everything seems to work fine except the bluray player will not output 5.1 to the sound system.

my setup is as follows
lg tv - 55lb700vzg
satellite receiver
virgin media cable tv box
raspberry pi box
samsung bluray player - bdh5500
sony 5.1 sound system - rmtah200u

the sony system is connected via optical cable to the tv and the tv is set to pass through the audio to the optical connection.
all other boxes are connected to the tv via hdmi.
i get surround sound from all the boxes except the bluray player. i have tried all the audio settings in the player but still nothing.
all i get is stereo or i think it is stereo because the rear speakers do not work.
i have tried a different hdmi cable but no luck.
is there anything else i can try or am i missing something?

thanks in advance [emoji4]

As it's the TV that's outputting to the Sony have a look at the TV settings to see if there's something there needs tweaking. Presumably the video is displaying on the TV and, if you turn the TV sound up, that's OK.

It could be a copyright thing though. The HDCP through HDMI can be tricky with this as the TV output is over an optical cable which doesn't support HDCP.

"High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection (HDCP) is a form of digital copy protection developed by Intel Corporation to prevent copying of digital audio and video content as it travels across connections."

Have you tried running the optical output on the blue-ray directly to the stereo receiver?

I would think that would work fine Terryl as there's no HDCP involved then. But I suspect that the OP has it connected the way he has for simplicity so that the amplifier simply takes over the sound from the TV. It will also simplify setting the delay correctly - assuming the Sony can do this.

Just noticed this. So you do get sound through but only in stereo. This kind of stands to reason as stereo is the lowest form of audio and not subjected to HDCP.

thanks for your replies guys
@PaulR interesting... i didn't think about hdcp. but if this was the case how come all other boxes are ok with 5.1?
@Terryl the bluray has only hdmi and coaxial audio outputs so can't plug it straight into the sound system as that only has optical input

i will try to copy a 5.1 sound file on a usb stick and play it in the bluray and see if it works
is there an adapter from coaxial audio to optical maybe?

HDCP isn't compulsory over HDMI. The other boxes may not implement HDCP, or at least implement it occasionally. Try watching a fairly new film or sports match on the satellite receiver or Virgin box.

They certainly are. Just make sure you get the right "sense", I got it wrong first time I ordered one years ago.

i have played this file but still not getting 5.1
Dropbox - ChID-BLITS-EBU-Narration441-16b.wav

i even tried to play the Underworld movie on a dvd but still not working
also played robocop 2014 on the virgin box and that worked. i don't have a newer movie on the virgin box to try with.
i guess i will have to look into one of those adapters and plug the bluray straight into the sound system. but will it work? who knows.
or maybe buy a new bluray player
is it common for bluray players not to output surround sound via hdmi?
has anyone ever had one that worked like this?

edit:

i just went to samsungs website and found the specs of the bluray player
http://www.samsung.com/uk/audio-video/blu-ray-player-h5500/
if you scroll down and click on show all specs and scroll down again to where is says audio decoding output what do you see?
wtf?? 2 channels??
how is this even possible? a bluray player that only outputs 2 channel audio? is this a joke or am i stupid?

It's very probable that the model you have will only put out L/R stereo, look at the next model up, (the BD-8900M) it has what your looking for, 7.1 out.(will work fine on a 5.1 system)

Well looks like it's only 2 channel audio out. Amazing. Learn to love it and live with it? :-rofl2

They were sold through Amazon for under £50 not long ago. Yes it is odd it has 3D capability for vision but not for the audio.

That player will output Dolby TrueHD/DTS-HD MA and its siblings DD 5.1 and DTS 5.1 through the HDMI, my first port of call would be the Player settings itself to make sure that Audio is set to Bitstream through the HDMI.

This will allow all Formats to play through the HDMI pas to the TV which will in turn pass the 'Core' tracks from True HD and DTS-HD down to DD 5.1 and DTS 5.1 as we all know Optical/coaxial does not have the bandwidth to bitstream the HD audio formats

i have tried all the settings. and i have tried all the possible combinations as there aren't many
plus the specs clearly show that it will only output 2 channels even though it does decode dolby and dts.
so... i think it's time to get a new player [emoji4]
and this time read the specs first

you have set the Digital Output setting wrong thats why your only getting 2.0 channels

Digital Output setting should be set to : Bitstream (Unprocessed) so in other words No Re-encoding of the bitstream soundtrack

Also leave the Downmixing mode alone it does exactly that what you set it to Downmixes Bitstream Tracks which is the exact opposite of what you want it to do.

Just as a matter of fact all Blu Ray Players will output TrueHD and DTS-HD MA out of there HDMI outputs if they did not the AV community would have sent millions of players back for not doing what they should

if i choose Bitstream (Unprocessed) i get no sound at all.
i have tried every single possible combination with the settings shown in the pictures and the most i get is some kind of spatial stereo odd sound.
oh well i have ordered a new player and will test it tomorrow

Just to Follow on my initial post for the Bitstream (Uprocessed) is correct as you want the player to pass Bitstream TrueHD/DTS-HD etc.. through to the HDMI on the TV then the TV should pass through the 'CORE' codecs from TrueHD/DTS-HD which are Dolby Digital 5.1/DTS 5.1 as Optical can only handle the Core soundtracks as it does not have enough bandwidth available to stream the HD soundtracks.

So sounds like a TV sound setting somewhere
