From their constant appeals to change the service licence terms nobody is watching most of these services. Viewing figures are awful for most of them.

It was a silly idea was to encrypt the local TV channels in the 1st place but it is too late now as the venture is almost sunk.

I saw a discussion about the encryption of these services recently on another forum. It was mentioned that being encrypted means they arent tied into some of the advertising time restrictions. Being able to run more adverts doesnt seem to be helping them though does it - the number of channels that have been taken over in the last year is ridiculous.

And when channels are going bust (Birmingham Im looking at you) or scrapped (Aberdeen et al) before they even get on air you know something is seriously wrong with the whole idea.

Its quite obvious we are going to end up with two companies providing services plus STV oop north. Long term Id expect to see them merge further.

Yep once the BBC funding goes it's goodbye all local tv...the viewership must be less than a few dozen imo

Notts TV is continuing on FreeView - but if it was the free BBC money that was basically paying for their satellite links their financial position must be perilous. They wont last much longer as an independent service.

Over in Norfolk once the BBC money ran out Mustard TV sold out to Thats.... TV. That was just a few weeks ago.

Local TV is a joke. The viewing figures are terrible, they stations keep asking for changes to their licences as local programming is too expensive and the only thing keeping most off them going in the first 3 years is the BBC handouts.

All local tv via satellite is doomed due to the poorly thoughtout stradegy of going with encryption thinking that they will make more revenue

But due to Brexit & Government austerity measures more & more people are turning to FreeSat & FreeView ;)

Strange thing is that my local tv station is for Cambridge fta via Sandy Heath DTT Multiplex via cable as the DTT is too weak  I have watched it a few times for the Cambridge Music Festival ect very poor re news ect,

The strange phenoma exists with the re-transmission of ITV-1 HD for Essex we get Medrian version for Kent via the Sandy Heath transmitter :-rofl2 even the VM cable transmit this ITV-1 HD version to Essex homes o_O

So I watch ITV-1 Anglia HD & ITV-1 London HD versions via satellite as they are more relevent to us Essex folk than what is happening is Ashford & Brighton,

I think that the powers to be do not have a clue hence the demise if Local TV :(

I asked Meridian a few years ago why the local news spot did not show the weather for the Poole area. They claim their coverage is aimed at the south east from Southampton on.

Twas a Jeremy Hunt* vanity project and a lot of people in the media industry were saying that it was doomed to failure before any of the station licences were awarded. *How he was let loose on something as vital as the NHS is beyond me.

I believe that another reason for encryption was the fact that this allowed restricted access to a small local audience and thus reduced the cost of buying in content for broadcast

Local TV is a complete and unmitigated disaster. There is no other description for it. Almost every station that actually got on air has either been sold off or pleaded with Ofcom to let them scrap the original licence conditions as totally unprofitable.

The viewing figures for most of the stations are terrible. And lets not forget the dismal roll call of failed stations which never even got on air in their original plans.

At the end of the day, few people want channels dedicated to their local village of Cow's Bottom. We already have local TV news, radio, newspapers and Internet. There was absolutely no reason at all to have a full TV channel for it, broadcasting low quality drivel.

If it showed 'local girls next door' (literally), then maybe there would at least be some potential interest from the male population.
