I was getting out of the car yesterday and a man asked me what size dish I had as he could see if from the road, even though its at the back of the house. 90cm I told him and then he said. I hope its earth bonded.

:-rofl2

It's utter parabolics.

I was getting out of the car yesterday and a man asked me what size dish I had as he could see if from the road, even though its at the back of the house. 90cm I told him and then he said. I hope its earth bonded. Only through the coax I said jokingly. No way he said, asking for trouble and your insurance won't pay out if you get a strike. Metal dish eh? Best to bond the dish to the pole and then run an earth cable of approved size to your earth bonding by your consumer unit. But that's at the front of the house I said, hell of a job. I know what I am on about he said. I'm NICEIC qualified you know. Now the Overseer here is rabbiting on about it. Problem is he has just moved in around the corner.

Perhaps he's newly qualified on a domestic installer course! By his reasoning, shouldn't all UHF antenna etc be earthed? They're usually higher than a dish, so more at risk?

What, I wonder, would he think appropriate for protecting foil underpants? :-ohmy

Could well be true - "book learning", but no practical experience/ common sense/"risk assessment", AGAIN!

The inbuilt earthing rod, difficult to find in cold weather and old age.

I remember when we used to 'bond' metallic blinds

I am an NICEIC approved contractor btw

I have often toyed with bonding my dishes for about 10 seconds, if they were at ground level I would probably just throw an earth rod in

I used to run miles of earthing cable for the Sparks when we did plumbing to earth every tap, steel sink, steel bath and radiators if they were installed using plastic rubbish pipework. I was lucky to be retiring when almost all heating installs became plastic piping. Copper lasts for ever.

We used to daisy chain the rods as well, I remember putting 6 rods in a garden once lol
Living where he does - with all that rain & snow - it's probably near 0Ohms, and he doesn't need any buckets of water :D

Alkathene was the greatest invention ever, no more having to run 10mm earths to the back of the house under the sink yeeeeeaaah

I've got 6 rods in my rear garden with lots of radials in a star configuration. However I'm on a PME system here, so keeping my radio equipment isolated from mains earth is a nightmare. I will only use linear psus which solves one issue but the biggest problem is always trying to isolate the radios with the PC.
