Hi,

Are 4K settop boxes a worthwhile purchase considering that there are not many 4K channels being provided at present?
I'm looking at the Mutant HD51 and the Tiviar Alpha+ boxes.
I appreciate that the Mutant has DVB-S2X tuners - however are these important at this stage, even considering future proofing?

Thanks.

I like Mutant for the fact that it has an excellent tuner sensitivity, without even taking into account S2X and multistream functionality. It's also very fast - you won't have to wait for any screen to load ever.

Limitations are no blind scan and no transcoding that you get on other receivers.

My TV is 32" and I mostly watch all my stuff on a 21" monitor so 4k wasn't a consideration. But it's a nice to have.

Depends what you want to use it for and what you have now.

Zero 4K has blindscan and DVB-S2X, however you will not know how much signal you get, the driver shows only unrealistic percentages.

I bought Mutant HD 51 simply because it can support CI+ modules which many subscription providers are offering these days.
The 4K is nice to have but wasn't a feature that I needed, and in my location I get even fewer channels than most guys located in Europe.

Yes they do. I tested it with nc+ module and DigiTurk Europe for 7E and they both work well.
Just be careful if you are recording a channel, DON NOT switch to another channel even if it is on the same transponder. The recording gets corrupted and you end up with black screen.
Firmware version:
OpenATV 6.0.0 (2017-04-24)

I found that most receivers work with CI+ modules, as long as you have ciplushelper plugin installed. I had my Viasat module working in Dreambox DM900, Vu+ Solo2 and this Mutant.

You will find the Mutant HD51 is a popular box around here, it's a fantastic box and one of the best I have had in years.

Does ciplushelper plugin work with any image?
I am using VTi 11.0.2 and prefer not to change it.

I only tried it with OpenATV on the Mutant but I don't see a reason why it wouldn't work with others.

I see. But the Mutant doesn't need this plugin to support CI+ modules.
I want to make sure about the VU+ SOLO V2 as I tried to use the nc+ module and it didn't work at the time. I wish I knew then about this plugin.

I definitely had to install this plugin before my module was recognised on HD51. Maybe some images have this plugin already installed?

Is it worth buying ahead of the Tiviar Alpha +? By the time I've put in the S2X tuners and the HDD into the Mutant, it is almost €100 more expensive than the Tiviar.

The Mutant is a much better box and has a ARM CPU, have a look on World of Satellite at their prices, you can also order it with 1xDVB-S2 and 1xDVB-S2X if you want to save money?

Thanks - I'm hunting around for a comparison of the receivers.
Does the S2X make much difference and can I swap a S2 tuner out for a S2X tuner at a later date? Is it the only show in town or what are the alternatives? I'm trying to keep costs down.

It's handy to have if you watch anything that's DVB-S2X but there isn't much at the moment, I got them both to future proof and they are better tuners (SiLabs Si2166D) Which is known for being really sensitive, its £12.99 if you buy it at the same time as the box. It looks like they give you the 2nd tuner free and can pick the DVB-S2X as well. Yes you can change it later on but will cost more overall I should imagine?

The mutant for me is a great all round box.

Dvbs2x + hdd + enigma2 I also have a dvd-t2 stick plugged into mine.

I fitted the hdd myself to save a few quid, on reflection I should have had the forum sponsor put the hdd in as I only saved my self five pounds.

Definitely a great box with plenty of options, you won’t regret it.

Thanks for the replies. It is looking like £211GBP for this box.
Which is the best firmware to add to this box?

Are there any alternatives around this price bracket that I should consider?
