My Satellite Setup
Laminas 1.2M fibre dish with an IBU, on a Clarke Tech USALS motor, covering 57E - 24.5W to an Octagon SX88. Displayed on a 20" Dyon LED TV.

Seperate 80 cm dish on 28E with a Humax Freesat for SWMBO.

Ever since my present SWMBO arrived I've been running my VU+ Solo on 28.2E as a standalone Freesat system. This week the VU+ remote sensor stopped working and I've eliminated the remote itself as a possible cause. So I'm left with the task (opportunity?) to change the STB for another. An alternate is to change SWMBO but Amazon seem to be out of stock. Anyway, I'm thinking of either a cheap Octagon type box or a dedicated Freesat box, neither of which need recording facilities. A significant factor is that it needs to be easy to operate, especially as we have three different sets of housesitters coming this year and the technical instructions I leave should ideally cover less than two sides of A4. ATM we're using my DR HD box which is proving a tad tempremental...

For something like this, I'd go for a simple Humax Freesat box.... but then you'd be missing out on non-Freesat-but-free-to-air channels. If they are important.

Wouldn't they be covered in non Freesat mode?....you see, I'm already making it complex...

They would be but then you don't have the full EPG. With an E2 box, you could use ABM with some EPG downloader...

Same problem here. I have an E2 box set up for Freesat but they get confused with the epg and in reality the E2 images are over complicated just to get Freesat. When my existing box used for Freesat packs in I will get a Humax. Less complicated for the girls. As it is I have a Fransat box that she never bothers with, gets confused with changing the TV inputs and its another remote.

Amazon is not the best place for replacement SWMBOs, but you do need to cast off old before you take in new.

So....today I took the line of least resistance. Thanks to Amazon and a friend in the UK I should have a Humax Freesat box with me next week. Strangely SWMBO seems to be getting used to the DR HD but as far as housesitters go, it's not an option with ease of operation.
