How to delay upgrading to the Windows 10 Fall/ autumn Creators Update

How to delay upgrading to the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update

Shows how to avoid/ delay this internet greedy upgrade, for those with slow download speeds on most win 10 formats.

:D

Re. #20

I've just installed the latest "Added Features" release of Win 10.

Took three hours in all, so be aware!

Have done the suggested fix for my home edition.

The landline I use is rural end user and totally useless.

Am waiting until the end of this month so can download update with the backup wireless ( very fast ) but more expensive prepaid ( ice net ) modem, thanks to the carry over data function.

Loaded the 2 other PCs to win 10 using link in post #14 reverted to win 7 OS after a few days.

Bought this PC with win 10 pre-loaded :-doh:-ohcrap

Looks like the backdoor upgrade to W10 will be closed on 31st Dec 2017!
Microsoft to close Windows 10 free upgrade loophole :(
Well, it's now clear that Microsoft DIDN'T close all the backdoor upgrades to W10 from W7 - a U3A colleague found this link "Download Windows 10" ( Download Windows 10 ) from somewhere!

I was very doubtful that it would work but he said that he'd upgraded an old W7 m/c a week ago and the process didn't even ask for the Product Key - so I had a go with my old Acer X275 Win 7 Pro desktop, and that did actually work, and again without asking for the Product Key, (albeit at the 2nd attempt after it hung in a "looping mode" 1st time around.), and so it's now running Win 10 Pro.

OTOH, it then did lots of further updates (and reboots!) and I've had to spend the last hour or so removing a lot of the unwanted "c**p" Apps that Windows 10 installs without asking (e.g. why would I need 3x Xbox apps or the Camera App, when I don't have an XBox, and the old desktop doesn't have a camera???).

Some of those Apps can be uninstalled via Settings but many cannot - and so I did some digging and found "IObit Uninstaller 8 Free" which managed to remove pretty much everything I didn't need . Uninstaller 8 Free kept nagging me to buy a subscription - but I ignored that because I will hopefully not have to use it too much again. If you want this very useful tool, it is here: https://www.iobit.com/en/advanceduninstaller.php#

It might be coincidence, but the wife's laptop has given some bother over the past few days where the operating system has hung about ten minutes after starting (Win 8.1), and the Avast antivirus (the only one that will work with the USB sticks and animation software she uses for work) always claims 'this is really embarrassing - failed to load UI'.

The mouse cursor can be moved over the screen but that is all that will happen, the only way to turn off is with a forced five second press of the on button.

I originally thought it might be the AV, but now you mention it, it could well be the operating system receiving detail of an uppgrade.

If it helps the original windows Defender, or is it security essentials package is automatically overridden when another AV is present, I was going to rip out Avast and the IoBit malware programmes tonight to see if these were behind the troubles.

@Channel Hopper

Never having had the "misfortune" to use Win 8.1 (was never tempted to "upgrade" from Win 7!), I don't know just how long it takes for updates to download and install, but Win 10 updates can take an age to do both.

It often downloads and queues them soon as the machine boots up, and then installs them one after the other - and that can take a mighty long time, especially if the broadband is not that fast and/or the machine is not itself the "fastest in the World" (as a m/c running Win 8.1 might well not be - given its probable age), and that means it can take quite a time for actual programmes/Apps to become available for use.

A decent SSD can help a lot!

What would my fresh install options be could I use this "upgrade"?

Well, an "upgrade" like this from Win 7/8.1 to Win 10 is virtually a "fresh install" because it replaces pretty much all of the existing OS, but it should keep all your existing installed Apps and preferences in-place and working (mine did) - and it only works if you already have an existing installation with a valid Windows licence which it can then "upgrade" (peoples' opinions "differ" on the latter point, and I am still "sitting on the fence" on that!)

OTOH, there's quite a lot of "Windows 10 crap" that you will then have to spend time removing after it happens!

And once you have removed it the bloody junk reappears at the next update!

Cleaned up the other two W10 machines with IObit Uninstaller Free this morning - and got rid of GBs of disk space and hundreds of Registry entries!

This utility seems pretty good, and works with Win XP upwards - and it seems a lot more effective than, say, Revo Unistaller Free which couldn't remove most of the Win 10 crap Apps.

Also, one of the m/cs got quite a few Win 10 updates after that, and none of the deleted ones then came back (noticed the same thing with SWMBO's old Dell 1525 which was updated to 10 over 18 months ago - I deleted quite a lot of the games and so on then, and they haven't come back since, although quite a lot of new crap had got in and had to be eradicated this morning.).

If it weren't for pc gaming (mostly because DX12) I would still using Win 7, or better, I would use only Linux by now.
I also fail to understand why a 'basic' user needs to upgrade to windows 10 and then have continuous windows updates that pile more crap after another.

There's a limitation on what you can clear up with those tools, windows will re-create most of those registry keys, most apps still there but hidden not totally removed, and having updates enabled totally defeats the propose.

Unless you remove all that junk directly on windows image before installing (some knowledge needed) there's no much you can do after.

Without interrupting the main thread subject any further, I've pulled the Avast and other smaller programmes that have been recently introduced (including IoBit update / Booster and Spyware), and fingers crossed the laptop is performing beyond the ten minutes. I did update Win Defender to the latest and carried out a full scan last night, which found four links to 'Hacktool / Win32, part of the key system used for remote access to the animation software when outside the works premises.

So it could be there is no update coming for Win 10 after all.47BE07BE-F9A5-4EEC-A37A-56ABD5FA41D5.jpeg

And based on this report

Microsoft Windows Defender: Finally Good Enough

I will refrain from reinstalling fresh copies of the removed AV/spyware programmes until I've had a chance to run Windows Defender for a while, since it did uncover stuff that IoBit and Avast couldn't see, though it might be a false positive result.

Unless somebody comes up with a really good reason to, (or the animation software fails to start under Defender)

Good that it's back in action. :O) And 8.1 is still good and very viable, security updates untill 2023, classic shell and a few tweaks = a great 7 MK2 :O)
Defender has turned into a very good av over the years. Am using Malwarebytes (free) as extra. Never found anything here, but good to do a check. And doing full disk surface\maintenance\check\scan now and then, a bad sector or something can give lots of strange symptoms.

Someday, only newer hardware\processors\drivers available, 10 will be the only choice. By then, thanks to the collection of great extra programs, getting in control over it will be even easier than now, so am not afraid of the future.

I'm not sure that's quite true because IObit Uninstaller appears to firstly remove the App files (generally seen 10-100Mb stated as apparently having being removed ) and then displays the relevant Registry Keys for you to select "Delete" - so, it looks to me, like it removes all the executables and links to each App.

"Microsoft Windows Defender: Finally Good Enough"???

Not according to this review:
Microsoft Windows Defender (2019) review: Bottom of the pile

BTW: that review highlights that Defender had a very high level of false positives!
