Somewhere in England (possibly?)!
Manure : In the 16th and 17th centuries, everything for export had to be transported by ship. It was also before the invention of commercial fertilizers, so large shipments of manure were quite common.

It was shipped dry, because in dry form it weighed a lot less than when wet, but once water (at sea) hit it, not only did it become heavier, but the process of fermentation began again, of which a by-product is methane gas As the stuff was stored below decks in bundles you can see what could (and did) happen. Methane began to build up below decks and the first time someone came below at night with a lantern, BOOOOM!

Several ships were destroyed in this manner before it was determined just what was happening.

After that, the bundles of manure were always stamped with the instruction ' Stow high in transit ' on them, which meant for the sailors to stow it high enough off the lower decks so that any water that came into the hold would not touch this "volatile" cargo and start the production of methane.

Thus evolved the term ' S.H.I.T ' , (Stow High In Transit) ,………… “So it’s really not a swear word” which has come down through the centuries and is in use to this very day.

You probably did not know the true history of this word.
Neither did I

Never mind manure, what'll happen to our stinking waste we currently send to the EU for processing after Brexit? The 'Dirty Man of Europe' will get dirtier...

Potential post-Brexit implications for UK's waste policy — EUbusiness.com | EU news, business and politics

In March we will be the 'Dirty Man not in Europe' :D

The UK had been sending a lot to China up to a few years ago, and Africa before that. Our local amenities have been improved to accept a variety of waste material that previously was rejected, they have also installed an incineration plant plus there is now a shop where household goods deemed too good to dispose of are sold back to the public.

It is getting better around here, though there is a lot more to do before it is acceptable. What is missing is the education of the general public to purchase less of the superfluous packaging in the first place, cut back on foodstuff that ends up spoiling, and keep a close eye on new methods of recycling.

Why we are unable to fuel a power station with our own waste is beyond me, are we just lazy?

Nah, it's just that in this day and age, burning things is bad apparently, so we must strive to create plastics, manufacture composites, dig up lithium (for batteries) and use nasty chemicals to create stuff that is presently seen as "green", except that isn't going to last...

There's a reason this planet evolved with the carbon cycle, and why plants & animals are carbon-based, it's a thing of life...

But if you want, you can create your own waste-to-gas generators, such as woodgas (which can also be used with carbon-based waste materials), biogas (the art of turning muck into brass) and whatnot to make fuel to run a petrol generator, free energy right there... :)

(Just got to put up with the risk of things potentially going boom... :-wow )

Sorry I think you missed the point as per the article (which I assume you read), other countries currently import our waste and process as fuel for power stations so why do we not process our own waste and get the benefit of generated electricity? Most factory and fuel burning chimneys use catalytic converters to convert toxic and waste gases into harmless inert matter, so what is the issue apart from lazyness?

Nah, I got the article, it's a problem that has been created through bureaucracy, EU says "Stop emitting CO2 or else!!", so, we stop doing so by closing & demolishing coal, oil & gas power plants which could have been adapted to incinerate rubbish with CO2 scrubbers added to the flues, so when it comes to dealing with our rubbish, to please the target-setters, we send the rubbish abroad to be burned elsewhere & fed into the european power grid which we're tied into via HVDC interconnects, and we can proudly proclaim that we are green and clean, because someone else is burning our rubbish and polluting the air in their part of the world instead of our own...

So, if we weren't being told what to do by our neighbours, we probably would have set up rubbish-burning incinerators that turn waste into power, but, we weren't allowed to. Yes there have been some small schemes which do burn rubbish, but they're on the scale of "Powering hundreds of nearby homes!", rather than millions, given there's millions of homes producing all kinds of waste that we could put back into use one way or another...

It's all an infestation of politics really, which is something that tends to be discouraged on this forum cos it tends to get carried away with heated debate if it's a hot topic... :)

Quite true we do not allow discussion of politics and should not do but the above is an explanation to the youngsters as to why us oldies want out of the EU, the EU are in control not us

It is too late to stop us going off topic, so I stand corrected I was making a generalization based on a personal poll I have been running since Dec 15th 2018 which was our alumni annual dinner. I have spoken to many people at that event and since on the subject (even an MP or two that I know) since then and my findings are that more over 40's are in favour of it than under 40's (my own children are not), the couple of exceptions that were my age range were merely unhappy as they had purchased villas or apartments in Europe. Having said that my neighbour across the road, wants out and he has a gîtes out in France and his dad has one in the next village, but his own business has suffered through being part of Europe, which just goes to show there is a melting pot of situations that sway people one way or the other.

Now back on topic, manure should not be exported, it should be put on rose beds.

Incinerating waste containing alumni is a major cause of something , so I read somewhere, in a another galaxy, far, far away..........

There were probably a few alumni at Leeds Uni that I would like to have "incinerated" when I was there a "few" decades ago - and then there was the LU "alumni" association that kept asking me for donations to fund "various" people/projects several years ago until I finally told them "in no uncertain terms" to "F-off" and NOT ask me again!

Since then, I've not been thus bothered:rolleyes:.
