Thought it'd be interesting to note some of the various music players & formats that were invented but never really took off, after watching a couple of Techmoan videos on a device called a Tefifon, I thought I'd start this thread off with just that, the Tefifon... :)

Code:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tefifon

The best way to describe it is it is like an 8-track cassette tape but using a plastic tape that is recorded in the same manner as vinyl records, except it's a linear format that runs in a continuous loop from start to finish, and is from the era where the 78rpm shellac record was still king, yet the sound quality from these Tefifon devices far surpassed that of even the highest quality 78...

Shame it never took off, it's quite an ingenious invention that could have really taken the music industry by storm had record companies taken it on as a format...

Anyway, 'nuff waffling, here's the Techmoan vids that explain it better (can't say I like the Pennsylvania-6 5000 cover though!!)... :)

The CED player

I have one, and loads of discs.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capacitance_Electronic_Disc

I have one too in need of a new stylus but only two discs.

It is part of my very large collection of obsolete format audio visual products some but not all listed -
Video
1950s Projector TV (4' x 3' picture on screen) - 405 line single channel VHF tuner
VHD video disk player (similar to CED but no needle in stylus)
Laser disc player
Reel to reel video recorder
4 V2000 VCRs
Betamax VCR
Several VHS VCRs

Audio
8 track recorder
Reel to reel tape recorder
Multi band tuner (SW, MW, LW and VHF)
Twin deck cassette recorder
Sharp vinyl record deck
Numerous other components - CD players, tuners, graphic equalisers, amplifiers etc.

Numerous satellite receivers including analogue receivers and decoders.

I am not exactly a hoarder (really) but cannot bear to throw away anything that is still working even though I have no current use for it.

The early disc-based video systems are intriguing, especially as most were still analogue compared to the likes of DVD & BluRay today, though I have read about the LaserDisc format having problems now with the discs starting to deteriorate around the edges (and gradually working it's way inwards) to the point where they're no longer playable, leaving just a shiny reflective thing that's not much use... :(

Well, unless you decided to use them as Album Art:
