Looking for recommended capacitor suppliers.
I tried to order from Farnell but at checkout it won't process it because the minimum order is £20. :(
RS want my full address so they can market to it (they say that on their webpage) so looking for somewhere else.

A little less analogue, and a lot more crap.

Most resets are done with the reset pin connected to earth when powering up the unit, but I would not know if Sony have this as a standard. Vipersan may have an answer though.

For small component orders, I tend to use ebay, people buy them up to make up the minimum order nonsense, then just sell what they don't use on ebay, that's how I got the cap collection for my two Amiga A600s (which I still need to re-cap!!)...

The counterfeit capacitor blight is long over now thankfully, and a lot of the claimed fakes where they depict a smaller capacitor in a larger capacitor's case were found to be daily mailed (I.E. completely made up just for the hype), just avoid anything unbranded or unpronounceable, personally I prefer Panasonic capacitors, think I mentioned that already, as they are pretty long-lasting and reliable... :)

I was always going to go for something with a recognisable name such as Panasonic, gone for a 5 pack of 220mf 10v ones to replace C823 in the first instance then I will look at C824 after.

Just soldered a cap, did I make a mess of it?

Do I have to remove the old solder before adding the new?

The easiest, and safest, way to solder any capacitors is to cut the wires, near to the capacitor, then solder the new wires onto the old wires. That way you don't risk damaging the circuit board.

I did touch the circuit board with the iron and it did change colour I have probably damage and all this was in vain. Damn.

Not necessarily, circuit boards are quite resilient, unless you cut the actual circuit. Leave the ols solder there and just add some new solder, when the capacitor wires are in place.

I replaced C823 and C824 and no improvement.
Think I'm going to give up now. I finally feel I'm chasing a lost cause.
The only way would be to get another faulty unit and get a working tuner out of it, finding one of these will be rare and cost a lot I suspect.
So thank you yo everyone who has advised me on this, greatly appreciated.

Presumably you fitted the capacitors the correct way round? i.e. with -ve and +ve the same orientation as they were originally

I'd find an earthing point (but I would first check with somebody at Sony)

It would most likely take me an age to speak to the tight person at Sony?
When I have found the earthing point, what do I do in leymans terms?

If no change, I'd say it's very much goosed, you'll end up spending more money than its worth trying to fix it an most likely end up with it still not working, really does require a background in electronics to find the fault and try and rectify it if it's a hardware issue, but if it's software, forget it and move on... :(
