The 10 UKTV standard def channels are being dual illuminated on a UK spotbeam 12129V 27500 2/3

So are they going fta?
Or is the tp rental on the UK spot so much cheaper its making it worthwhile for UKTV to move?

We know Sky are cutting back on the payments they are making to channels so they may have decided to stop supporting the standard def variants of encrypted services

I'd be surprised if channels like Watch went FTA but the ones that are already on Freeview like Dave and Drama are surely the most likely to switch off the encryption, if any?

It would also make Freesat much more appealing for me as at the moment I prefer the Freeview lineup because it has channels like Dave.

Unfortunately I can't receive Freeview in The Netherlands.

According to this article at least Drama, Yesterday and Really have been assigned Freesat channels but still encrypted, so something is happening. Bit worried that Dave hasn't made it to the list yet, let's hope it will also be added soon.

I suspect it'll be inevitable unless they decide to shift some channels between the two transponders, keeping all FTA on the spot and moving some pay channels to the other wide beam.

Ive been looking at the +1's - only Yesterday currently has a timeshift service, so it would be a simple job to swap an encrypted service from the spotbeam for Y +1.

Indeed, and then the same again for Dave Ja Vu later on when Dave eventually joins.

However, they'll probably just switch the other transponder to a UK spot and be done with it. ;)

I always thought that encryption-wise a channel and it's timeshift are essentially under the same deal, I've never seen a linear channel FTA and ita timeshift still encrypted? I suspect we will though with Yesterday, at least for now.

Any tp changes affecting Sky boxes have to occur before December 16th - thats when the annual platform lockdown starts this year. Of course there is nothing to stop UKTV starting a new spotbeam uplink over the holiday period but it cant be dealt on Sky systems until about Jan 4th or whenever lockdown ends this holiday

Does this prove that transponders on the new gen. of satellites can't just be switched between UK and Euro beam as was originally suggested?

I reckon some can and others can't, hence the change.

Off-air measurements in the NW of England for 12.129V versus 11.817V are:

11.817V TP6: 13.8dB C/N
12.129V TP22 13.6dB C/N

I'd take from this that SES have wound down the power of the UK spot to match the field strength of the EU-wide footprint on TP6 - this will make it harder for overspill. Anyone in Germany, south of France or elsewhere on the fringes confirm C/N figures between TP22 and other C/D band spot TP's?

I;m sceptical that they would wind down the power when lowering the FEC has exactly the same effect with the added benefit of more bandwidth.

That's what seems odd to me, never seen a UK spot TP with as low C/N as that before measured in the UK.
