Actuators AGAIN ...

Its magic mushroom time is it not ? that would make it more interesting, never tried them/never will but ive heard a few stories about peeps taking them over the years:rolleyes:
Psilocybin screws too much with your perception of reality during a trip. Some peeps are never the same agian.
Pot is just fun - mostly harmless when taken in small doses, chills you out, and makes everything quite funny.
Personally, I think alcohol has not as good an effect, and is more head-ache inducing, but comes in far better tasting forms (IPAs, Gigondas Red Wine, GTs etc). However, it also removes inhibitions, so aggression comes out too often when it shouldn't. So pot is probably still better.

Hmm. You just might be able to call Psilocybin an actuator of the mind :D
But maybe we should move this to some other interesting thread??

Never bothered with drugs st1 but I am not against anyone who smokes weed/pot out of others peeps way, a few of my friends smoke it, as for beer, ive had my fair share of that over the years, but rarely have a drop now days, it takes me days to recover so leave it alone.

Ive been a bit of a lad in my younger days with beer and women but that's another story, blimey I sound like an old man lol, 2 years untill the big 50 still a pup to most on here :D

So, the other night my Juperjack heavy duty actuator decides it's not going to move with the E2 error, infact this has happened a few times this last couple of weeks after freezing temps. A warm kettle of water first in the actuator arm made no difference until I tried the same on the motor, then it worked. On closer inpection the gasket seal holding the motor cover has perished obviously letting in water. This is crap, after a few months of use, this actuator has hardly had any use even though it has been in storage a few years, this should not happen!
I gently undid the screws holding the motor and yes, the water drains out!
My solution after cleaning it all out is a telecoms external joint lid, which are not used in the field any more, nice snug fit with dessicant packs also in the top half...P1010004.JPG

Is that a sleeve 31a put to good use? I remember those from my apprentice training at Shirehampton, 1982!

Hehe, spent many years outside jointing, infact had course at Shirehampton myself around 1992.
It's a sleeve 30D, the 31A was much larger and sleeve 32 was even bigger.

Agreed Alex, I will be in touch with Dave about it, although its not his fault, he just sells them. They use a crappy carbon fibre type gasket, seen them in the plumbing trade, had on go in the loo cistern some time back.

It´s been a while since I saw one, went in the offices!
Slightly ( well way ) off topic, how much two pack resin have you squirrelled away, that stuff was brilliant!

Sorry, back to topic!

I work inside now, so not go any, but it was great that resin, used in air blocks. The 30D lid was rescued from the bin, thought, I can make use of that!

Welp, got up early this morning to check my actuators to see if any can be of any use. Erm... they are all crap.

2x SuperJack 3624 HD (heavy duty, not high def) ones both have a bit of play in the worm drive (about 1mm). Doesn't sound like a lot but it translates into a fair bit of accuracy issue... One of them is brand new - never used.
1x SuperJack 3024 XL HQ (?) - seems to be a ball screw type but designed to take 30v instead of 36v. Used but in good visual condition. Again, a bit of play in the worm drive but it seems like it's more of the play inside the gearbox rather than the worm drive itself. Ball screw types (if it is indeed that) shouldn't have any play there. Need to take it apart to see if there's anything that can be tightened there.
1x Venture Skylighter - this is the acme type (i.e. a normal thread/nut worm drive). Again - play in the drive.

This can't be normal. Surely, they don't ALL have play in them? I can't risk buying a £400 Venture ball screw jack to find it has the same problem....

My main SuperJack QARL 3636 for E-W on the 1.8 also has some play in it CJ, about 2mm in total and it's not all that old. The 24" SJ for inclination has about 1mm slop as well :(

Is this really the best that's available in Europe? Hmm... This makes the 1224 look golden, which has no play in it at all even after years of service.

A former forum member came across a very nice stash of top quality actuators a few months ago. He bought a job lot of actuators from the eBay seller that he bought a Precision dish from, some of them were brand new but 20 years old and were real top class makes. There were some pictures of them on the forum, they might give you an idea of which type to look out for?

One of them was actually the SuperJack XL HQ - and it's really not that different from the current SJ range (other than it might be a balls screw type - still need to check that). Still has play in it....
