Make sure you are using the latest version it works fine on Vista and Xp with .dvr .ts and .trp files . You must be missing codecs if it will not work.

Dont believe the card slot in the Vantage is fully compatable with new white cards but the white cards work in the diablo cams ok although not premium channels you should be able to pick up a cam cheaply in Italy as they are made there.
Do you not know the existing analogue system uses VHF/UHF and Saorsat is just to bridge the gaps in reception of UHF DVB-T mpeg4 NOT a alternative so they reckon only 10% of the population will need it.
Encryption is used in the UK with DVB-T so why not use it as it is perfectly logical.

I believe the usb drives are formatted in fat 32 for the comag (max file size 4gb) and the files recorded are .dvr ,now these files will play back on your PC with Gom player but I have never attempted to record them to DVD..
Download Gom player to your PC and they will play no problem.
