    Lap top Technical Advice

As Paul says Li-Ion batteries have quite a limited number of charge/discharge cycles - probably around 500, so if you do discharge and recharge to try and preserve battery life then once a week is probably better than once a day. I've read many places saying discharging to 40% then rechargning...

Question for people who have ordered stuff from HMV..

I've had things take a week, so at Christmas it will probably be longer. If you manage to buy it locally as long as you don't open the mailed one shouldn't you be able to send it back when it arrived without any reason, just saying you don't want it any longer? (distance selling rules, 7 days...

    Patient H.M. dies

A tragic case, experimental surgery carried out in 1953 prevented him from forming new memories of events, while leaving other cognitive abilities intact. He had an enourmous impact on the science of memory, which, in a bitter irony, due to his amnesia he never realised. "Henry G. Molaison, 82...

    PL Lamps Versus Filament

Yes, as Topper says these lights take a good few minutes of being on before they are at their full brightness. I've changed 60W filament bulbs for 18/20W CFL ones and, once warm, I think the low energy ones might be slightly brighter than 60W filament ones.

Pace TDS470N Sky+ box in fringe reception areas?

Quite a basic question but I did a search and didn't find anything recent. Does anyone know how the Pace TDS470N Sky+ (PVR3) receiver does in fringe reception areas? Are there any currently available Sky+ boxes with more sensitive tuners. Thanks :)

Tutorial: Audio Tape Backup to CD

How far apart are the tape player and computer? While your idea would work, it would be far simpler if you could do as mhku and Analogue suggest and connect the tape player to your soundcard line in and record to waw file, then clean up the recording, set tracks and burn to CD :)

    Quiz: Taken Apart Appliances

12/12, but down to some guesswork as I haven't actually seen the food vacuum thing before and as with Rolf some of their names aren't what I would call them :)

Electric blankets - really just for old married couples?

With it getting colder I find that my 14 tog duvet with a blanket over the top still leaves me cold at night. While leaving the heating on is one option I am quite tempted by the idea of an electric blanket, but I cannot get over the sterotype of an old couple plugging one in before retiring...

Doing the rounds - the fan that's keeping UKTV on the air

This picture is doing the rounds on emails and sites like Digg, claiming to be of a fan keeping the UKTV channels on the air. Anyone know anything about it or where it came from?

    Solar panals to power PC

Last time I looked at turbines (not to get one, just to see how effective they were) I worked out they would take 20+ years to pay for themselves. Are things any better now?

Do you leave a tip at the barbers?

Since I started this thread (nearly 2 years ago) I have also joined the buzz club and invested in a pair of clippers. Number 6 on top, 4 then 3 then 2 down the back and sides. I'm happy with this and the clippers have more than paid for themselves :)
