Hey I need advice on what to buy or how to go about having TV in Spain
My father in law has a villa in Spain with a satellite hook up but has no receiver and now no means of watching TV since the sky box he was using has now blocked out the few channels he could view. I Have heard various things about open boxes but there is no Internet connection available so I don't think that's an option. I just need some advice as to a receiver or programme available to get some kind of TV while he is over there obviously the more channels the better utility anything would be a benefit
Thanks in advance

Sky box blocking out channels?

Presumably not a Sky UK official receiver in that case.We wont help with any suggestions apart from official subscriptions on this forum - the easiest way to get a sub is for you to buy a proper subscription & ship the receiver & card out to him. The number of channels will be limited by his dish size & location - the BBC / ITV channels are none existent in many areas without huge dishes.

You could try a freesat box for the ftv uk channels.

I discounted that because many of the Freesat channels are transmitted on the UK beams - which frankly are terrible strength in much of Spain. However if the father has had BBC & ITV reception in the past than yes its a valid suggestion

As the required dish size for reception of UK Channels varies dramatically through Spain, can we please be told where the villa in question is?

We really need to know what part of Spain as reception can vary from non-existent to fairly easy.

We could also do with knowing what size satellite dish he has and how easy it is to get to it if it needs to be changed to a larger dish. Are there any restrictions on dish size there?

Sorry about any vague info I personally don't really know much about this kind of stuff.
An English Sky box was being used for a few years but it only received BBC, itv, channel 4 and a few movie channels movies4 men ando stuff in the last year all the channels are now gone. As it not a permanent residence he doesn't want to buy a package and would be happy with just terrestrial TV but we don't know how to go about that either.
Villa is located in southern Spain almeria

Edit: Corrected typo Sky replacing skin

Will he be happy with a 5 metre dish installation?

What is a English Skin Box ? If you give us a make and model we can work out what and how he was receiving .

You meant to write Sky maybe ?

Get him to look into a 27.5W system for the basic channels .

The UK beam stuff was lost to southern Spain when the new satellites went into service.

They are no longer possible in Almeira without very big dishes indeed. Start thinking of a dish 3m plus in size - possibly quite a bit bigger depending on the local field strength!

With no internet there the options are VERY limited. With a bit of fiddling with receivers & dish alignment it may be possible to get some of the BBC & ITV channels off 27.5W by hacking the signal, but there isnt any guarantee how long this will be available either.

Realistically the options are:

Do without & watch the Spanish channels

Get internet fitted & watch an online stream.

Find someone to install for 27.5W but maybe spend a few hundred € with the possibility it could end at any time or may require ongoing service visits when the keys change.

You are on your own if you chose this route - we wont help with hacking encrypted signals.

Hmm , i disagree .

He must have a 1.2 m dish at least as that was the minimum required to get Sly a few years ago , so all it needs is alignment to the right position , around 50eu , a compatible box can be had from ebay for 50-70eu and google it's free .

Obviously that's as far as we can help , google is your friend as mentioned above .
