Kicks off on May following a not guilty plea earlier this week

Mr Thompson denied two charges of selling equipment that facilitated the circumvention of copyright protection measures.

The case, heard at Teesside Crown Court, was brought by Middlesbrough Council after Trading Standards officers raided Mr Thompson's shop Cut Price Tomo's TV in Middlesbrough in March.

The council bought two of the TV boxes in question from Mr Thompson's shop.

I wonder if Teesside residents approve in their council paying for domestic satellite receivers - loaded or otherwise - out of their hard earned taxes ?

Its an interesting case, and probably the first of many involving Kodi and other Android style boxes including the infamous Firestick.

Obviously where this guy went wrong was installing the 3rd party piracy software before sale.... Which is why he has been targeted.
There are lots of devices on sale that are legal but obviously used for illegal practices.

Growing up I could never understand why record companies didn't kick up a fuss over twin tape recording hi-fi's
What exactly did they think people would use if for lol

Report in today's Daily Mail says there were 5 arrests in Bolton, Bootle, Manchester and Cheadle for selling 'loaded' boxes.

They can't and won't get them all. I don't know why they bother - even if you buy a bare box, you can still load up everything in minutes. How is that more legal than buying an already 'fully loaded' one?

CJ,

I think its the fact of openly advertising a fully loaded box that is the issue. The broadcasters probably wish to maintain a profile of stamping out on piracy. The buyer of a non loaded box can do what they wish with it in the privacy of their own home and broadcasters have neither the time or resources to go after home modders.

The broadcasters , poked by the FA with an exceedingly sharp stick probably wish to maintain a profile of stamping out on piracy.
Corrected. Can't have their profits and stranglehold on the sport interrupted.

CH,

I think that most broadcasters or picture rights owners accept that there is going to be "leakage" of their product. It's possibly just a question of degree before they take action? However, I do agree that in the case of the FA, they do seem rather zealous in their pusuit of bunging leaks.

Slightly off topic but none the less connected, whilst everyone wishes to respect names and protect those names or brand names if you like, I think all the big organisations are up their own backsides when it comes to such stuff, let's be honest the 6th letter of the alphabet 1, fiasco on the fantasy game a few years ago was just stupidity itself, any newspaper or magazine can use the names of the teams as many times as they like, great free advertising, but a guy sets up a sixth letter of the alphabet 1 game and gets pummelled by their lawyers for it well it is crass to say the least and very small minded of such big corporations.

I think that by going after a few suppliers in different areas around the country it will generate local and national headlines that will include the words "kodi" and "illegal". This alone will put off a certain percentage of the population buying or even to continue to use one of these boxes. Believe it or not there are a few upstanding members of society and if content providers can stop a small percentage from migrating to one of these boxes or even better reconnecting to their service then job Done! Saving just 1-2% of sly and Virgins customers alone would be a huge sum of money

Glasgow,ish!
According to that link he was selling the boxes for £1000
Gumtree is full of sellers doing "fully loaded" boxes for £65-70 mark up here, saw many promoted ads for them being sold here locally before I got that bloody T.V. unit sold on there.

Somewhere in England (possibly?)!
Update on the court case of the guy in Wales selling those loaded Kodi boxes - and, further down the page, a "warning" that legal action might soon be taken against people using the "illegal" s/w on such boxes.
