AV Amp Chat

<snip>

I also had a LOT of issues with the Onkyo NR609 AV amp, which resolutely refused to pass signals from any of the connected stuff, including the Sky box and BD player, to the TV (which it should do when the Amp is switched to standby). Only after a lot of trial & error, and various changes to various cables, did everything appear to return to "normal" and with no apparent explanation except that it might have a been a faulty cable between the Amp - but, OTOH, I seem to remember having a similar issue several years or so ago, and, again, I can't remember the earlier issues having had an obvious solution but they suddenly just "disappeared" (but it did develop a well-known problem 2 years ago in that the whole HDMI input board just suddenly failed due to ball-gate array issues with the ICs, and that was repaired under an extended warrantee from Onkyo - and I seriously wondered if the same thing had happened again and I would be in for a new AV amp as well and thus an even bigger bill coming!).

If you are looking for a new av amp I can recommend a denon AVR-X2200W and imho a bargain.

But I am bias as I own one :D

If I have to replace the Onkyo, it might well be a Denon or a Yamaha (had an RVX-573 (IIRC) for many years and it sounded very good, and then only replaced it with the Onkyo because the latter has a lot of HDMI inputs whereas the Yamaha has none - but that's still in the attic as a reserve as it's too good to just junk!)

OTOH, don't want to spend another £500 or so at this moment.!

I had problems with Onkyo and Pioneer amps in the past. My current Yamaha has been the best one to date..

Had a look at the spec - looks pretty good but probably a bit overkill with the Tannoy DC6T's floor-standers/DC6 Signature Centre/DC4s rear/BK=XLS200 sub-woofer, which are all very efficient and so I never need to run the NR609 at anything like flat out (and can't - wife, & neighbours with young kids through a rather " transparent" wall!). Hopefully won't have to anyway (for the moment at least).

My Pioneer packed up on me after 14months.

But I kept the mini speakers for my surrounds.

The denon has plenty of hdmi inputs including 4K upscale.

It's also Dolby atmos, but I am running it in a 7.0 Dolby pro logic x.

I am using monitor silver 2's for my front left and right. And an "upgraded" Pioneer centre channel speaker.

The monitors kick out more than enough bass to make the doors start to warp and rattle :D

What I really meant was that a new receiver/amp is hopefully not on the cards at the moment. OTOH, should it finally be required then I would not want to spend the sort of money that the RX-V 1700 probably cost when new (about £500 would be my absolute limit, and hopefully quite a bit less in a sale), and it would need to drive those speakers (so no 7.1 setup and so on) which I/we very much like because they are very "tuneful" and efficient.

I have had 2 Onkyo's in a row now and both have been excellent, bought the Onkyo 656 before Christmas on offer and it's been by far the best amp I have owned

Prior to that I had a high end Sony and will never again get one of those

The amp I mentioned is £349.99 in most shops.

I picked mine up in a sale at one of my local av/hifi shops.

And has internet radio/nas playback, Spotify connect, 8 hdmi inputs 1 on the front. As well as duel hdmi out option.

Wireless or wired ethernet. Has audacity room correction built in, and came with a set up microphone.

As mentioned before my monitor sliver 2's can be quite harsh, audacity tames them and makes them sound sweet.

The amp can be configured to any speaker combination up to 7.2 pro logic x or z.

As well as atmos i thinks it's 5:5:2 (but don't quote me that)

The streamer part of it plays flack 24/192khz as a bonus.
