That reflector looks awfully thin, and ... there's no LNB at the focal point???
Until you realise that the lnb is on th main body of the craft, and that you are looking up at the reflector from underneatth and in front of it.
It's an offset reflector! Haven't seen that on a satellite before.
(You are looking through the reflector at the ribbing, or whatever you call it.)

Won't that take some serious alignment thrusters?
... one small jerk and you're pointin several 100 km to one side of where you where just before.
Or is that just the same as a PF dish??

Can't get my head around it.

Lets hope they have more luck unfolding it than Eutelsat did with W2A a few years ago!

Just like Eutelsat 10A (W2A) was supposed to, this Echostar XXI will downlink on 2185...2200 MHz.
Inmarsat may start a similar mobile satellite service in a year or so, on 2170...2185 MHz downlink.

Can't find the planned location for XXI, too many Echostar registrations at ITU, so pick one: 10.25°E, 13.9°E, 17.2°E or 22.0°E.

It is identical in design to TerreStar 1 of a few years back, providing 500 'spotbeams' from the 18m antenna. There is no 'focal point' as such and the S-Band frequency is suited for this.

Makes a change it turning up on a bit of the arc I can actually see here - might have to have a play with that one once it goes on air.

No launch this year...
Space exploration in 2016
By December 23, the satellite had already been integrated with the launch vehicle, when an unspecified technical program required to postpone the mission until January 2017, at the earliest. Independent sources said that the launch vehicle would have to be disassembled and one of its stages returned to Moscow, but representatives of the International Launch Services, ILS, which manages the mission, said that no such action would be required and the launch had been postponed by a "logistical" issue.

Echostar 21 is -currently - not mentioned in next years' launch prospectus

I have some S-Band equipment dating back to the late 90's, triband Chaparral feed and a Bentley Walker LNA, an enormous cast metal box with N-Type in/out connectors .
