What is the best grease to use when regreasing metal and plastic mechanical items in AV equipment - drive trays, tape mechanisms etc? Also what is the best way to remove old solidified grease?

"" Nail varnish remover should do the job for removing solidified grease ""

Read acetone, much cheaper:D

Avoid plastic parts which disolve

The problem is most of the parts are mainly plastic

I've used this for years, it the best thing to use on nylon cogs with stubborn solidified grease, there is different strengths, if you use nail varnish remover as I mentioned before, it will be fine its a really diluted version.

Plastic or nylon????

Have read plastic from #1

Regards
Both nylon and plastic. Rollers and gears usually nylon while guide tracks ("geared" and plain) and levers are plastic.

Dont use nail polish or acetone on any plastic parts, nylon is OK, but the plastic will melt, one big mess.
I would use denatured alcohol and an old toothbrush.
