This surface check will take a while methinks ..on account the drive is USB mounted atm ..
But should be complete when I return from work..
Worth it tho' ..cos old drives can be unreliable.

Having installed service pack 2 ..I'm currently grabbing an SP3 ISO ....which hopefully contains the dot net framework needed for the NVIDIA driver package to be installed for the GeForce 5600 graphics gard ..
I'd forgotten ...how much manual installation was required back in the day..

Well ..that was fun ..NOT..
SP3 isn't like an msi addon ...it actually re-installs as a full overlay ...updating registry settings a total of 8 re-sets ...but it did go in ..and sure enough the PC is now showing XP with SP3 ..
..and yes DOT NET is installed ...and yes the NVIDIA installation now runs ..
But our survey said Naa AAAhh ..
No compatible hardware found ..driver update aborted..
..and YET this is the driver package nominated by NVIDIA for this card in this system ..
Total Bollox ..
So ..I took a chance and installed the Driver .exe I got yesterday for windows 98SE/ME/2000
..and this installed without issue..

I do remember all the pissing about with driver updates back in the days of XP ..
nothing's changed.

There is a distinct smell of peppermint and hotcross buns round here atm ..as Chameleon is introduced to something a bit more up-to-date..
I dug out an old 200gb Maxtor IDE that wanted purging and surface checking ..

Old as in IDE and surplus to any other requirements ..
..but figured a large drive ..with reasonable access time for Linux ...it being a recent OS

Well so far MINT is a bust..
I can see and share my Networked Servers ...but can't play anything ..
Some mkv files will play audio ...but no video ..
I'm assuming it's a codec issue ..
but of course ..
not a clue how to fix/import new codecs etc..
I can't use Firefox as this crashes every time I start it up ..
Probably this wants/needs proprietory drivers for the NIC card.
or HDCP isn't enabled by default..?
I suspect I have a lot to learn with this OS ...but one things for sure..
Not an out -of - the - box ..product ..

Despite swearing by Linux for server duties, it is not, IMO, a user friendly desktop OS. I've tried many distros, including Mint and I simply did not get on with any of them at all.

OS is a highly personal choice, of course. What doesn't work for me, may very well work for anyone else.
