I have been wondering for some time:
Just why are there so many 1.2 Channel Master dishes with polar mounts in the UK?
What Sat-constellation meant that people in the UK needed 1.2 meter semi-pro dishes with polar mounts to watch tv?
As I have gleaned from nostalgia postings here, BSkyB and similar started on 19.2E, then moved to 28.2E while going digital.
But those 1.2 must be from the early nineties or perhaps late 80s.
In Sweden (and Denmark to a lesser degree), people put up polar-mounted prime-focus dishes to watch German, Dutch and French TV back in the 80s.
Did the UK public hunger for Dutch and German TV in the UK too?
Or was there even then a need to watch Saturday footie with a weird sound-track?
And why Channel Masters? Weren't they more expensive than many of the prime-focus PMs?
I think when their was mass hacking of the Seca encryption system everybody wanted a decent dish to watch the hundreds of channels that were open back then. It even led to the collapse of On Digital and subsequently ITV Digital (Our terrestrial services) at the time.

For me it started when my parents decided to cancel Sky sub in 1995 in favour of 'free' D2MAC content, which was mainly on 1W. We got an 80cm dish to receive that but it was, sadly, nowhere near big enough to get Thor 1 or Sirius 1 at 5E. This was when I started getting larger and larger dishes (at the age of 15!) but didn't get my first 1.2m CM until 2010 for £35 with the PM.

Something tells me (maybe I am wrong) that this is not 1.4m dish but only 1.2m. Some people, even some companies, instead of horizontal size of the dish mention it's vertical size. If that is not enough, they do not bother about working area of the dish, they simply measure from edge to edge.

I was thinking the same but surely its worth a tenner to 'play' with

Even if you just had it fixed on 7e and 10e for arquiva etc pair it up with a V8 Golden and you got a decent little setup

Then again it could be a donkey.....

This is where they like to remove the bearings and bolt it shut to stop the rotation...

Prodelin 1134 1.2m TX/RX dish with fixed az-el and it looks like the matched feed (f/d 0.8)

It's not the same as the Ka one, which has many more ribs on the back but still an excellent dish.
